Chapter 100: What About Me?
Hearing this, Qiao Yufei was startled and stumbled backward in panic, nearly falling before she managed to steady herself against a chair.
“Her death has nothing to do with us. Yucheng, who told you these things?” She forced a smile onto her face.
Her reaction only made Qiao Yucheng’s eyes turn cold.
“Dare you swear it?” he asked quietly, staring at the woman before him.
Swear it...
Qiao Yufei’s face went pale at once. With obvious grievance, she said to Qiao Yucheng, “What is there to swear about? The reason Qiao Yumo died back then was that she carelessly fell into the lake and drowned. It had nothing to do with us at all. Yucheng, even if you don’t want to accept my feelings, you can’t use something like this to wrong me.”
After hearing her explanation, Qiao Yucheng merely looked at her in silence.
Qiao Yufei’s gaze instinctively darted away.
Qiao Yucheng gave a low laugh, then asked her again, “If this had nothing to do with you, why are you afraid to swear?”
“I won’t wrong you, but I also won’t let Yumo die in vain!”
If Yumo had truly been killed by them back then, he would never forgive them.
After Qiao Yucheng finished speaking, Qiao Yufei seemed suddenly struck, her expression collapsing in an instant.
“Yucheng, she’s dead. She’s been dead for so many years. Why can’t you just forget her? Why can’t you be a little more clearheaded?”
Why did he have to cling to a little girl who had been dead for more than ten years?
As soon as Qiao Yufei’s words fell, the color drained from Qiao Yucheng’s lips as well.
“She will always live in my heart,” he said, looking at Qiao Yufei with complete seriousness.
Even though Yumo was no longer in this world, she would forever live in his heart.
He would always remember her kind and lovely smile, and he would always remember all the warmth she had once given him.
After losing both parents as a child, he was taken into the Qiao family as an adopted son. On his first day there, he was in a wretched state, covered in mud, looking like a beggar.
That day, the three daughters of the Qiao family all came to see him.
Qiao Yumeng disdainfully called him a beggar.
But only that little girl with the round cheeks was willing to come up to him, share snacks with him, and comfort his uneasy heart.
Yet he did not appreciate it. He thought it was merely another form of mockery from a young lady. He threw away every snack she had given him, and she, though spoiled and pampered, did not get angry. She only bent down and quietly picked them up.
At first, he ignored her, living alone and apart in the Qiao household.
Everyone said he was aloof and strange, but she alone always wandered about before him with a bright smile, often kicking a shuttlecock or a ball deliberately to his feet and asking him to pick it up for her.
At first he found her annoying, but later he still grew familiar with her. He asked her why she insisted on playing with someone as strange as him.
She looked at him with those beautiful eyes and said with heartache, “When I see that you’re unhappy, I feel sad too.”
From that moment on, that incomparably warm girl lived forever in his heart.
Although he was only a child then, to him she was the only warmth in the world, the only comfort for a life without anyone to rely on.
But he never expected that later, when he left the Qiao family to study elsewhere and then returned, he would be met with the news that Yumo had passed away...
...
Hearing his words, Qiao Yufei trembled, then asked him in collapse, “She lives forever in your heart?”
“Then what about me?”
