Chapter 60: She Was the First in This World to See Good in Him
He glanced at the clock, then instinctively looked toward the bedroom door.
Calmly leaning against the headboard, he seemed to be waiting for something...
At last, after only a few minutes, a faint sound broke the silence outside the door.
Moments later, there was a gentle knock, and a girl's soft voice floated in from the other side.
“You scoundrel…”
Hearing the commotion, a glint flickered in the man’s eyes, but he only replied in his usual cool tone.
“Come in.”
His handsome face showed little emotion, as steady and composed as ever.
No sooner had he spoken than the door was pushed open, and Lin Nanxun, wrapped in a cream-colored, plush nightgown and hugging a soft pillow, stepped quietly inside.
When she saw the man reclining on the bed, a small smile lit her face, and she made her way slowly to the bedside.
She hesitated there, instinctively glancing at the empty space beside Shen Hanzhi.
Seeing her approach, Shen Hanzhi set his book aside, turned his gaze on her, and asked in a deep voice, “What is it?”
Caught off guard by his question, Lin Nanxun stammered, then glanced at the wide bed and sighed softly. “This bed is so big.”
She was afraid of upsetting the scoundrel—afraid he might toss her into the lake if he got annoyed.
After her words fell, there was a brief pause on Shen Hanzhi's face, and a trace of amusement flickered in his eyes.
“So?” He raised his eyebrows, deliberately teasing her.
She had improved—she knew how to distract and mislead now?
Hugging her pillow, Lin Nanxun dipped her head and whispered, “I... I want to sleep with you…”
Aunt Xu had gone abroad on vacation, and with no one to keep her company, she couldn't fall asleep.
Tossing and turning in bed, she finally couldn’t resist coming here.
For her, this large room—with the scoundrel in it—was warm and made her feel safe.
Lin Nanxun had expected the scoundrel to get angry with her as he had before, and she was just starting to worry when the man on the bed set his book aside.
“Come up,” his deep voice resonated suddenly.
A look of delight appeared on Lin Nanxun’s face. She hurried to the other side of the bed, climbed up obediently with her pillow, settled in beside him, and burrowed under the covers, nestling close to him.
Only when the faint scent of tea from his body brushed her nose did a contented smile spread across her face.
“You’re so good to me, scoundrel.”
Her sudden words of comfort made Shen Hanzhi pause slightly. He turned to see her peaceful expression as she nestled against him, ready for sleep.
She truly resembled a newborn kitten—soft, sweet, and docile.
She was the first person in this world to ever think he was a good man.
As this thought crossed his mind, Shen Hanzhi's gaze deepened. He was about to ask her something when her gentle voice came again.
“Just as good as my grandpa.”
She’d wanted to say he was as good as her grandma, but then recalled her grandma wasn’t nearly so stern; he was more like her grandpa.
Though, the first time she met her grandpa, he hadn’t been very fond of her. But later, he doted on her so much, never letting her suffer the slightest hardship.
The moment Lin Nanxun’s words fell, Shen Hanzhi’s expression froze.
Grandpa?
He frowned, his face darkening at once.
Was she so attached to him—so dependent—simply because she saw him as her grandfather?
