147 We Are Not Opening the Door!
Even if the supplies inside the property management center had been looted by Zhang Tao and his group, it was impossible for them to have taken everything away.
However, when Hu Bo and the others arrived at the property management center, they were completely dumbfounded.
More than a hundred people had already gathered here, but none of them could get inside.
"What is going on here?" Hu Bo shouted.
Seeing Hu Bo and Bai Luer arrive, the others poured out their grievances all at once.
"It's Elder Qin and the others! They've occupied this place and refuse to open the door and let us in!"
"These bastards wouldn't work earlier, but now they've locked the door!"
"Those old fogies!"
The crowd cursed furiously.
Hearing these curses, Hu Bo fell silent.
These people had given up defending the perimeter walls early on and had all rushed straight to the property management center.
Doubtless, they had their eyes on it because it was relatively safe.
A bunch of selfish hypocrites—how were they any better than Elder Qin and his cohorts?
"Elder Qin! Our boss pushed herself past her limit and needs to rest. Can you please open the door and let us in?" Hu Bo walked up to the main entrance, still trying to reason with Elder Qin.
Hu Bo's tone sounded almost like a plea.
"Little Hu, everyone has their own destiny! You need to figure out how to survive on your own; you can't always rely on others," Elder Qin's cold voice came from inside.
Hearing Elder Qin say this, Hu Bo felt as though he was about to explode with rage.
Relying on others?
Ever since the apocalypse broke out, elders like Qin and his group.
Hadn't they always relied on everyone else to find food for them?
Not only did Elder Qin and his people refuse to help, but they also constantly pointed fingers and gave orders.
Taking advantage of their advanced age, they would always make snide and sarcastic remarks.
Countless people held a grudge against Elder Qin and his kind.
In the midst of the apocalypse, why should anyone have to support a bunch of unacquainted old freeloaders?
And with so many demands, too!
It was only because of Bai Luer that this resentment had been suppressed all along.
Never did they expect Elder Qin to treat them this way now.
"Elder Qin! I am begging you on my knees!"
With a heavy thud, Hu Bo dropped straight to his knees on the ground.
Hu Bo was actually not that young anymore, already in his thirties.
Yet he went to such lengths now just to save Bai Luer.
It was his way of repaying her kindness.
"It's not that I won't give you face. If it were just the few of you, I wouldn't mind letting you in. But look at how many people are at the door right now—if I open it, wouldn't they all flood in? Surely you understand even that much," Elder Qin said indifferently.
If there hadn't been so many people outside the door, Elder Qin would have been willing to open it.
After all, having someone as powerful as Bai Luer around meant a great deal.
As long as they kept following Bai Luer, they would survive.
That was Elder Qin's calculation.
It was a pity the current situation no longer allowed for it; self-preservation had to come first.
Hu Bo finally understood upon hearing this.
It was impossible to make Elder Qin open the door now.
Their group was doomed!
At that moment, the zombies had already closed in right behind them.
"Ah! I've been bitten!"
"Help!"
"Don't push me, don't shove me!"
A chorus of shrieks and howls erupted from the crowd.
Everyone scattered in all directions, each desperately searching for a way to stay alive.
"Put me down! I need to protect everyone!"
Bai Luer beat against Xue Feng's shoulder, struggling to get down.
Because she was still being carried over Xue Feng's shoulder the whole time.
"Protect? Save your own life first. Hu Bo, you guys follow me too." Xue Feng sprinted toward a nearby villa.
Seeing this, Hu Bo and the others felt a surge of panic.
How could running to that villa possibly stop a horde of corpses?
It would only mean dying a little sooner or a little later.
Yet they had no better options at the moment.
The few of them could only grit their teeth and follow Xue Feng as he ran.
Once they reached the villa, Xue Feng finally set Bai Luer down onto the sofa.
The zombies behind them were already catching up.
"Divine Firmament!"
A bolt of lightning, as thick as a human arm, surged forth from Xue Feng's fingertips.
In an instant, the thirty-odd zombies outside the door were all struck down by the chained lightning.
"You're an Esper! Brother, why didn't you say so earlier?" Hu Bo nearly jumped for joy in his excitement.
He never expected Xue Feng to possess supernatural powers!
Espers were extremely rare in their base, numbering only seven or eight in total.
Many other Espers had been unwilling to join their base.
Even those few Espers had fled by now.
Now that Xue Feng was an Esper, it drastically increased their chances of survival.
"You didn't ask," Xue Feng chuckled.
They hadn't asked!
Hu Bo and the others felt a bit depressed, but they had no time to dwell on it now.
They hurriedly piled tables, chairs, and benches against the doorway to block it.
"Head to the top floor, the top floor is safer!" Hu Bo and the others still had some experience.
They knew that for zombies, climbing stairs was actually the most difficult obstacle.
"I have to go save people! Let's see if we can bring anyone else over here!"
Yet at this moment, Bai Luer insisted on heading back out.
She attempted to rescue the others as well.
Witnessing this, Xue Feng was left quite speechless.
She really was a saintly martyr!
She didn't even care about her own life.
At the very least, however, Bai Luer didn't blame Xue Feng for not using his supernatural powers to save people sooner.
"It's no use, Boss! It's too late!" Hu Bo hurriedly blocked the doorway.
Xue Feng took a more decisive approach, simply grabbing Bai Luer and dragging her toward the upper floors.
It was exhausting to reason with a saint like Bai Luer; changing her worldview that love should embrace the world was nearly impossible.
Action spoke louder than words!
He was certain many people must have tried to persuade Bai Luer in the past, but it clearly hadn't worked.
Otherwise, the City Garden base wouldn't have degenerated to its current state.
Hu Bo and the others let out a collective sigh of relief.
Thank goodness for Xue Feng!
Otherwise, they truly would have had no idea how to handle the current situation.
They would have likely been torn to shreds by zombies long ago.
Once Xue Feng and Bai Luer went upstairs, Hu Bo and the others thoroughly blocked off the staircase leading to the second floor.
They piled up sofas, electrical appliances, and everything else they could find right there.
Even if the zombies discovered them, it would be extremely difficult for them to charge up.
After finishing all of this, Hu Bo and the others finally felt somewhat secure.
They noticed that Xue Feng had already taken Bai Luer all the way up to the rooftop.
When Hu Bo and the others stepped onto the rooftop, they couldn't help but gasp sharply.
As far as the eye could see, the entire place was densely packed with zombies!
There were at least one or two thousand zombies, completely overrunning the entire City Garden.
In some areas, clusters of zombies could be seen gathered together.
Every single zombie's claws were stained red with blood, frantically stuffing something into their mouths.
It was the flesh and blood of the survivors.
"How could this be! Why on earth has it come to this?"
Tears immediately streamed down Bai Luer's face as she collapsed to the ground, witnessing the horrific scene.
The base she had painstakingly built with so much sweat and toil had now been reduced to a playground for the dead.
Though she didn't know how many people had managed to escape.
She could be certain that at least a large majority of them had perished in the jaws of the zombies.
"It's all because of you," Xue Feng sighed.
"Because of me? Is it because I didn't do enough?" Bai Luer looked up, her eyes filled with confusion.
"It's because you lacked the strength, yet you gathered so many people here. If these people had been scattered to other places, perhaps so many wouldn't have died all at once."
Though harsh to hear, every word Xue Feng spoke was the absolute truth.
