You have a fine physique!
"Nice body."
Xue Feng added this remark before turning to leave.
Zombies had managed to sneak into the base, which meant everyone needed to be more vigilant. Song Yan finally realized that she had been completely exposed to Xue Feng's gaze. But what did it matter? He was her savior; a few glances were hardly an offense.
Xue Feng convened a meeting in the morning, requiring everyone with a B-level rank or higher to attend. This meant Tang Qiqiang and Liu Jun were present as well. He briefed them on the situation regarding the Level 3 mutant. Naturally, Xue Feng omitted the part about seeing Song Yan bathing, so as to avoid any awkwardness.
The group felt a lingering sense of fear upon hearing the news, especially Tang Qiqiang, whose face turned pale. He never imagined that a Level 3 mutant had actually made its way into his own living quarters. Had Xue Feng not discovered it, he and his wife would surely have been in grave danger; a Level 3 mutant would not have stayed idle for long and would eventually have turned to consuming humans.
"These mutants are impossible to guard against. Shen Ruyan, I want you to develop an emergency protocol for how to deal with zombies that appear inside the base when I am not present," Xue Feng instructed.
The base already had several contingency plans, mostly aimed at attacks from outside zombies or survivors, or even in the event of internal betrayal. However, there were no procedures for dealing with zombies appearing within the base itself, especially high-threat ones like a Level 3 mutant, which no one but Xue Feng had the ability to dispatch in one go.
"This is my negligence. I will formulate a plan immediately to mobilize our forces and minimize losses," Shen Ruyan said, looking ashamed. As the person responsible for strategic planning, she felt a deep sense of guilt for this glaring oversight, feeling she had failed Xue Feng’s trust.
"If there’s a loophole, we just need to fix it. These things are hard to prevent, which is why we must be even more cautious," Xue Feng said with a nod, choosing not to reprimand her further. Without the system providing the exact location of the mutant, even he might have spent a long time searching for it.
After the meeting, Xue Feng retrieved ten barrels of cooking oil and had Gu Xiaoqian send them to the kitchen. With the base population growing, consumption had increased as well. The hundred barrels of oil the system had gifted him would have lasted him alone for over a decade, but with over a hundred people in the base, it would last little more than a month, even with careful rationing. The system's rewards were becoming rather meager.
Xue Feng couldn't help but grumble to himself. Of course, he understood that the system's rewards were secondary; the true value lay in the intelligence.
Driving his Doomsday Armored Vehicle, Xue Feng headed straight for the Northern Hospital. He wanted to see what kind of monsters were lurking there. The number of zombies on the road was even lower than before, and there was not a single survivor to be seen. He wondered if they had hidden themselves away or if they had all been drawn into the abyss that was the Northern Hospital.
It took about two hours for Xue Feng to reach his destination. He saw the hospital standing in the distance and, as before, stowed his vehicle away. He moved through the woods to avoid the main road, not knowing if the lunatics inside had set up any lookouts. He had no intention of launching a frontal assault; the North Mountain Hospital felt far too eerie. He planned to infiltrate stealthily, so he had to be extremely careful.
He soon reached the perimeter wall, which was at least three meters high and surrounded the entire hospital. Though it was topped with barbed wire, there was no electricity running through it. He didn't rush in, observing the area first. To his surprise, he found no zombies in the vicinity—not a single one. Furthermore, the hospital's main gate stood wide open, as if welcoming anyone to enter.
Xue Feng spotted many cars parked in the courtyard, including one he had previously given to Qin Fengshan. It seemed Qin Fengshan had indeed come here and entered the hospital, only to quickly become a prisoner. Even more unexpected was the lack of guards around the hospital; it seemed as though the place required no protection. However, he was certain people were inside, and entering through the front gate would surely result in being detected.
Just then, he heard the loud, piercing roar of an engine. A Ferrari pulled up along the road and stopped at the hospital gate. Three people stepped out: one man and two women. The two women were quite beautiful, though their features looked somewhat stiff—clearly the result of plastic surgery, and they looked so similar they had likely been operated on by the same doctor.
The man was rather stout, with a face full of fleshy jowls. He wore a designer watch on each wrist and a thick gold chain around his neck that must have weighed at least four or five pounds. He was even wearing slippers. He had his arms wrapped around the two women.
Xue Feng found it hard to believe. The man was dressed like a complete nouveau riche. If this were before the apocalypse, such a display might have garnered him followers—people who appreciated his "individuality" and lack of concern for others' opinions, especially since his wealth bought him plenty of sycophants. But this was the apocalypse. Wasn't that heavy gold chain a hindrance? And slippers? What if he were chased by zombies? Could he run fast? And why two watches? One was enough to tell time; the rest was just dead weight.
The two women were no better, wearing miniskirts and high heels. People like An Xiaowei only wore such things when flirting with Xue Feng; they always wore sneakers in the base to stay prepared for emergencies. Had these three not experienced the apocalypse at all? They looked as if they had just walked out of normal society.
Xue Feng couldn't help but shake his head. As it turned out, his guess was correct. The man in slippers was named Chen Yilei. When the apocalypse broke out, Chen Yilei had been vacationing at a suburban villa with his two girlfriends. With ample food and water, the three had spent their days drinking and partying, oblivious to the world outside. The villa had its own power supply, so they had no idea what was happening. With no cell signal, they assumed it was just because of the remote location. Chen Yilei was actually pleased to be away from the troubles of the world, indulging himself to the fullest.
It was only yesterday, when their supplies finally ran out, that they decided to head back into the city at a leisurely pace, only to be horrified to discover that the world had changed. Everywhere they looked, zombies were wandering about, gnashing their teeth and waving their claws, desperate to tear them to shreds.
