Chapter 131: The Special Elixir!
"I see."
Xue Feng nodded, seemingly grasping the reason. It appeared the old dean had been right all along. Old Feng had truly achieved some research breakthroughs—methods to turn ordinary people into super-powered beings, and these results could even be mass-produced. The Dr. Yang he had encountered earlier was likely nothing more than a test subject.
"But this drug must have side effects, and severe ones at that! Or perhaps the yield is simply low. Your dean isn't as impressive as he thinks."
Xue Feng sneered. The reasoning was simple: if this drug could be used freely, he wouldn't have seen only four super-powered individuals. There would have been an army of hundreds by now.
"Insult the Dean! Kill him!"
Several men, provoked by his words, roared and charged at Xue Feng. Xue Feng was right; their drug did have side effects. It destroyed the nervous system and caused irreversible psychological distortion. Dr. Yang, whom he had met on the helicopter, had been mentally ill, but he hadn't been that deranged at first. It was only after repeated doses that he had deteriorated. However, these men would never admit the Dean was flawed; they viewed this as part of a grand progression. Side effects were inevitable, and they believed the Dean would eventually solve the problem.
Realizing these men were not to be underestimated, Xue Feng stopped engaging in close-quarters combat.
"Divine Firmament!"
Xue Feng activated his ability. A ring of lightning instantly surrounded him, swirling like a coil.
"Impossible! It’s identical to the Dean's power!" one of them exclaimed.
"This guy can release lightning too!"
"Don't be afraid! Charge together! This is for the evolution of humanity!"
The others shouted, brandishing their scalpels as they rushed toward him again.
"Lightning? You’ve got it wrong. This isn't just lightning; it's the Heavenly Thunder!" Xue Feng bellowed.
The lightning coiling around him suddenly moved as if it had a life of its own, surging toward the four men. In the blink of an eye, it pierced through their bodies. The men froze in place. As Xue Feng walked past them, their charred corpses slowly collapsed to the ground. He didn't even bother to look back.
"Interesting. So the Dean's ability is lightning," Xue Feng mused. He hadn't expected the Dean's power to be so similar to his own. But his ability was no mere lightning; it was the Divine Firmament—a power far superior to ordinary electricity. Moreover, he had noticed electrical flashes coming from a room on the third floor. The Dean must be there.
With no one left to stop him, Xue Feng made his way to the third floor, where he witnessed a horrific sight—one that caused him genuine physiological discomfort. A monster stood at the end of the corridor, a grotesque fusion of human and zombie. Xue Feng clearly recognized the face; it was the rich kid who used to drive a Ferrari. Most of the body below the neck, however, consisted of zombie organs.
"Roar... roar!"
The monster lunged at him, but its movements were labored and awkward, as if it hadn't yet adapted to its new form.
"Perish, you filthy thing..."
Xue Feng spoke softly. A bolt of lightning struck out, and the monster instantly exploded into a mass of gore. Even a standard zombie wouldn't have met such a pathetic end; this stitched-together creature had possessed no real combat power at all.
Just then, the sound of applause echoed.
"Brilliant, truly brilliant. You disposed of my Frankenstein in one blow. Of course, I didn't expect much combat capability from him, but it's a pity—he was my first successful test subject."
A refined-looking old man stood at the other end of the corridor, clapping as if he truly appreciated Xue Feng's actions. Xue Feng hadn't seen him earlier due to the monster blocking his view.
"So you must be the new Dean. You created this thing?" Xue Feng frowned.
"Indeed. Using electrical stimulation to restart the hearts of the deceased and fusing them together—what a marvelous creation!" The Dean gazed at the pile of flesh with fanaticism, looking at the remains as if they were a beloved treasure.
"Electricity can resurrect the dead?" Xue Feng thought it was utter nonsense. How could such a thing happen? Even in the apocalypse, basic biological logic had to be respected.
"Of course it can, provided one has massive energy. The crystal cores inside zombie brains can provide that power, combined with the zombie's heart and body! Essentially, I’ve given the zombie a new head," the Dean said, becoming increasingly excited. He rattled off a series of technical terms, seemingly trying to explain his theory. Xue Feng listened for a while but understood nothing, other than the fact that it had something to do with the crystal cores.
"You're strong to have made it here. You must have killed all my assistants. Any interest in a partnership?" The Dean extended an olive branch.
"Partner with a freak like you?" Xue Feng shook his head. He had zero interest.
"It seems you don't know my current research results. What you saw just now was merely a hobby. My true goal is to allow ordinary people to evolve into super-powered beings," the Dean continued, showing no disappointment.
"Your research has side effects," Xue Feng said coldly. He was confident in his assessment.
"True, there are side effects, but it is only a matter of time. I will solve them eventually." The Dean's expression finally darkened; Xue Feng had struck a nerve.
"And what does that have to do with me?" Xue Feng snorted.
"It has everything to do with you! You are powerful and surely have many followers. Don't you want them all to become super-powered? You could secure your standing in this apocalypse, perhaps even rule the entire world!" The Dean looked at Xue Feng with confidence, expecting his speech to move him.
"That sounds somewhat interesting. But why don't you do it yourself?" Xue Feng nodded and began walking toward the Dean.
"Maintaining the operations here consumes too much time and energy. I don't want to waste my time on such trivialities. I want to complete the great cause of human evolution and leave my mark on human history..."
As the Dean continued his mad rant, he suddenly felt a chill at his throat, and blood gushed out.
