Chapter 10: The Cure for the Sanctimonious Hypocrite
With a thunderous bang, the car rammed the massive body of the mutant straight into the sturdy wall. The enormous creature’s body twisted and tore from the impact, wounds opening everywhere. Yet the brute was monstrously resilient; even with its body battered and mangled, it continued to lash out desperately.
Thud, thud... The mutant’s massive hands pounded the vehicle, making the armored car ring with heavy blows. Even the thick armor was left pitted and dented from the assault.
At this point, Xue Feng had gone all in. One strike hadn’t finished the mutant. Without hesitation, he shifted into reverse, backed up a distance, then charged and crashed into the creature again.
Bang! Crash!
Again and again—seven, eight times in total—he smashed into the snarling mutant, finally crushing it into a mangled heap of flesh.
Only after confirming the danger was completely gone did Xue Feng stop the car.
You Haoyun was furious. “Xue Feng, you bloodthirsty butcher, you twisted maniac! Look at what you just did—”
“Shut up!” An Xiaowei glared coldly at You Haoyun. “Stop standing there spouting nonsense! Mutants aren’t as easy to deal with as you think. Yesterday, it took us the whole morning to barely kill one!”
“That’s no excuse to make it such a bloody mess,” You Haoyun retorted stubbornly. “A knife would have done the job! There’s no need for all this brutality—just give them a swift end. Xue Feng, what you did was inhumane. You’re a sadistic butcher!”
“I—”
“Enough, Xiaowei, drop it!” Xue Feng cut her off as she tried to say more. “Get that mouthy nuisance out of my car!”
“Get out already, you irritating loudmouth!” An Xiaowei had long since run out of patience with You Haoyun’s self-righteous lectures.
Once Xue Feng unlocked the door, An Xiaowei gave You Haoyun a hard shove, sending her tumbling out of the car.
As You Haoyun scrambled to her feet, Xue Feng tossed a kitchen knife through the window. “Didn’t you want to show compassion to the zombies, You Haoyun? There are seven or eight right over there—go deal with them with your kitchen knife! And remember, keep it civilized. Don’t be a bloody butcher like me!”
“I’m a girl! I can’t kill zombies—let me back in the car!” she pleaded.
Click. As You Haoyun grabbed for the door handle, Xue Feng locked it again before she could get in.
“Open up! Let me in!” Seeing that Xue Feng was serious, You Haoyun, the self-proclaimed saint, panicked.
Her shouts drew the attention of a nearby zombie, which came lurching toward her, jaws snapping. Terrified, You Haoyun bolted, but there were too many zombies around—escape was impossible.
With no other option, she circled the car, desperately dodging the pursuing zombies. After several laps, adrenaline surging, she scrambled up onto the hood and climbed onto the car roof, barely escaping their grasp.
The roof of the armored car was over two meters above the ground. Only after climbing up did You Haoyun manage to avoid the zombies’ attacks.
Once out of immediate danger, she exploded with rage. “Xue Feng, what’s your problem? Are you trying to get me killed?”
Xue Feng chuckled coldly. “Congratulations, you guessed right. If you can’t even handle a single zombie, why should I waste food on a useless burden like you?”
“You—you—” You Haoyun stammered, then protested, “Are you even a man, Xue Feng? If you are, you should protect women!”
Xue Feng laughed. “Oh, the Tang Dynasty double standard? I’m afraid there are no little red sweet potatoes to tip you in this apocalypse.”
Safe inside the armored vehicle, Xue Feng was completely at ease. The reinforced panels were impenetrable to zombies, and the thick bulletproof glass of the windows offered maximum security. He reclined in his seat, listening to music, utterly relaxed.
Meanwhile, You Haoyun was terrified. Two zombies had already surrounded the vehicle, clawing and roaring below while she dodged atop the roof, always one misstep from disaster.
But that wasn’t the worst of it. As she balanced precariously above the snapping jaws, Xue Feng started the engine and drove off.
Fortunately, You Haoyun managed to grab the roof rack just in time; otherwise, Xue Feng’s sudden acceleration would have sent her tumbling to the ground.
Finally, reality hit her hard. Defeated, she gave in. “Brother Xue Feng, I was wrong! Please, I beg you, let me off just this once. I’ll do whatever you say from now on—please, just let me in!”
“How could I? I’m a bloodthirsty butcher, a cold-blooded executioner! A pure and gentle fairy like you shouldn’t be tainted by someone as cruel as me.”
“Brother Feng, you’re too funny—just joking with you! Please, open the sunroof and let me in. I swear I’ll never go against you again!”
“Just one more chance, please…”
“No.”
Xue Feng glanced at her with a mocking smile, then leaned back and closed his eyes to rest.
Helpless, You Haoyun turned to An Xiaowei. “Sister Xiaowei, you’re the kindest—I know you’ll help me. Please let me in! I’ll follow your lead from now on. Just one more chance!”
An Xiaowei replied with a sweet smile, “You brainless big-chested fool. If you want to die, no one will stop you—just don’t drag us down with you! Didn’t you want to be compassionate with zombies? Go ahead, get down there and be humane with your zombie boyfriends. Off you go!”
“Xue Feng and I are both bloodthirsty butchers, ruthless executioners—nowhere near as gentle and adorable as your zombie sweethearts! Look, they’re already dying to get up close and affectionate with you!”
At this, You Haoyun’s face turned an ashen green. Zombie boyfriends? They didn’t want to get close—they wanted to eat her alive!
She realized begging An Xiaowei was useless and turned her pleading eyes back to Xue Feng.
“Brother Xue Feng, I’m begging you... If you let me in, I swear I’ll take care of you tonight and make you feel wonderful, all right?”
Xue Feng burst out laughing. “Well, well, little girl, you finally learned your lesson, didn’t you?”
