Chapter 94: Don’t Set Your Sights on Me
Wang Shaofen looked troubled. “It hasn’t arrived yet…”
Liu Shuhua laughed even louder. “Everyone, did you hear that? She talks such a big game, but hasn’t even received an admission letter. Stop making a fool of yourself in public!”
Shen Chutang reached out her hand toward Deng Meiru. “Second aunt, hand it over.”
Deng Meiru instinctively clutched the letter. “What are you doing?”
“You know very well what I’m doing. That admission letter isn’t meant for Saisai, is it? You know your son’s abilities as well as anyone. Give back Qizai’s letter.”
Shen Chutang stared directly at Deng Meiru, who grew increasingly uneasy under her gaze. “I don’t know what you’re talking about! Shen Chutang, we’ve humbled ourselves to beg you, just to let us stay for a while. If you don’t want to, so be it, but why hurt Saisai like this? He’s just a child!”
Upon hearing Qizai’s name, Wang Shaofen immediately looked at the letter in Deng Meiru’s hand. Was it really Qizai’s?
Liu Shuhua couldn’t help but interject. “Shen Chutang, what nonsense are you spouting!”
But Shen Chutang remained completely unafraid. “If I’m the one talking nonsense, why not open it up and show everyone?”
Deng Meiru, feeling guilty, replied, “We’ve already looked at it just now—what’s the point? It’s my son’s name; how could I possibly mistake it?”
Shen Chutang had no patience for further argument. She snatched the letter from Deng Meiru’s hands.
Seeing that Shen Chutang was about to open it, Deng Meiru immediately lunged to take it back. She absolutely could not let everyone see the name inside, or she would lose all face today! And without the admission letter, they would have no reason to move into Shen Chutang’s house.
But Shen Chutang deftly avoided her and unfolded the letter. The name inside was clearly written: Wang Junqi.
Shen Chutang glanced at Deng Meiru, her expression cool. “I didn’t know your son’s name changed to Wang Junqi.”
Wang Shaofen hurried forward. “Is it really Qizai’s?”
Shen Chutang nodded and handed her the admission letter. “Keep it safe and take Qizai to register next week.”
Wang Shaofen was moved to tears, nodding repeatedly. “Of course!”
In an instant, everyone was stunned. The lowly servant and single mother Liu Shuhua had just mocked—her son had actually been admitted to Peterborough? And the beloved young master, showered with attention, hadn’t even received an admission letter? Yet the Shen family had gone to such lengths, throwing a grand banquet in celebration and even pressuring Shen Chutang to give up her villa in Xishan!
Shen Chutang swept a cold gaze over the dumbstruck crowd. “Since Saisai hasn’t been admitted, there’s no need for him to stay here. Besides, it seems that living in the Xishan villa isn’t so important after all—a child with good grades can attend school no matter where they live.”
The reason Qizai’s admission letter had ended up at the Shen household was probably because both he and Wang Shaofen had previously lived there, leading to the address mix-up.
As she finished speaking, Shen Chutang turned to leave, only to be stopped by the old matriarch.
Her face was dark and her voice cold. “Even if Saisai hasn’t gotten into Peterborough, your second uncle still needs to live at your place. Find a time to help them move.”
Shen Chutang smiled. “Didn’t second uncle just say he could stay with the Shen family? Why insist on living with me? Don’t tell me that since his business has failed and the family’s short on money, he’s using this as an excuse to move in, thinking he can bully a single woman and take over my home?”
The old lady’s face turned ashen. “What nonsense! We would never think of such a thing!”
“Madam, why bother pretending? Even if it’s for your son’s education, you could simply rent a place nearby. Besides, the Shen family has so many rooms—surely they could fit four more people. Why must they move in with me?”
“Just moments ago, you were spreading rumors that I only lived in the Xishan villa thanks to the Shi family. Now you shamelessly want to move in yourselves. Isn’t this a slap in the face?”
Shen Xueshi’s business had failed and he owed a considerable amount of money. Their real plan had always been to take over Shen Chutang’s villa—whether or not Saisai got into school, they were determined to force her out.
Now that Shen Chutang had exposed their scheme, the old matriarch’s chest heaved with fury. “You unfilial girl! How dare you speak to me like this?”
“If I don’t speak for myself, who will? Everyone who tried to make me give up my home—it’s easy for you, since you’re not the one losing anything. Shen Xueshi is deep in debt, yet insists on moving into my house. It’s not hard to guess what he’s after.”
Shen Chutang’s gaze swept coldly over the group. “Madam, if you want to clean up your son’s mess, that’s your business. But don’t make me your target.”
With that, Shen Chutang strode out of the banquet hall, Wang Shaofen hurrying after her.
“Chutang, thank you,” Wang Shaofen said, her gratitude obvious as she clutched the admission letter like a treasure.
Shen Chutang waved her off, unconcerned. “It’s nothing. Qizai earned this. I’ve got other things to attend to. I’ll be going now.”
As she left the hotel, Shen Chutang immediately spotted that familiar car.
