Chapter 101: You Can Learn to Rely on Me
Lu Beiqin’s dark eyes roiled with fury, his voice cold as ice yet edged with savagery. “Don’t think that just because you’re a woman I won’t hit you. Say one more word of nonsense, and I promise you won’t see tomorrow’s sun!”
The man’s gaze was far too fierce. Shen Duoduo could not help stumbling back two steps, a chill creeping inch by inch up her spine.
The women behind her naturally sensed that something was wrong, but they quickly understood that this man was not Shen Duoduo’s boyfriend at all!
“Was Shen Duoduo just trying to bribe this man with money, only to be rejected?”
“I’ve never seen anyone throw themselves at becoming a mistress like this. She’s disgracing all of us socialites in the capital!”
“It’s unbearable to look at. Listening to her, this whole ‘West Mountain Villa’ thing probably isn’t even Shen Duoduo’s, is it? She can spin a whole story out of thin air.”
The socialites could no longer sit still. Standing beside someone like Shen Duoduo was simply beneath them.
Seeing Shen Duoduo’s face turning green one moment and white the next, Shen Chutang could not be bothered to say another word. She took Lu Beiqin and headed out.
“Sorry.”
Once they got into the car, Shen Chutang unexpectedly apologized first.
Lu Beiqin was somewhat puzzled, and only then did Shen Chutang explain, “My phone was taken just now. They deliberately used it to send you a message and trick you into coming here. It was all my negligence.”
Lu Beiqin started the car. “It’s fine. Did that woman touch your phone?”
Shen Chutang shook her head. “It was a few students. They looked unfamiliar to me, and I don’t know which class they’re from. But they shouldn’t be Shen Duoduo’s people, after all she isn’t a student at the affiliated middle school. Maybe it’s Shen Tingting at work again!”
Leaning against the window, her hand supporting her head, Shen Chutang let out a soft sigh. “I’m afraid I’ve made a fool of myself in front of you. One Shen family, and yet so much trouble.”
Lu Beiqin glanced at her. The night wind lifted the stray hairs at her temple, and the neon lights along the street slid across her brows and eyes, lending her face a fragile, almost shattered beauty.
He looked for a long moment before turning his gaze away. “No.”
After a pause, Lu Beiqin went on, “Do you want my help?”
Shen Chutang smiled. “How do you plan to help?”
“I can make sure they never appear in front of you again to keep harassing you.”
She had once heard that cab drivers knew all sorts of people, and some of them even knew people on the rougher side of things. Perhaps Lu Beiqin was one of those.
Shen Chutang shook her head. “It’s fine. They can forget about getting anything out of me.”
After all, Lu Beiqin still had to make a living in the capital’s social circles. She did not want him dragged into trouble because of her.
With both hands on the steering wheel, Lu Beiqin kept his eyes on the road ahead. “I’m your husband now. You can try relying on me.”
Shen Chutang froze for a moment, her cheeks warming slightly. “All right.”
The car headed toward home. Just after rounding a bend, Lu Beiqin keenly noticed that two cars had been following them for two blocks.
Silently, he pressed down on the accelerator and turned away from the route home.
Shen Chutang noticed it too. “What is it?”
Looking into the rearview mirror, Lu Beiqin saw that the two cars had indeed followed.
“We’re being tailgated.”
Shen Chutang immediately looked back and sure enough saw two black sedans. It seemed they realized they had been discovered, and no longer bothered to hide it. They stepped on the gas and came after them.
Strange. Whose cars were these?
Shen Chutang asked herself whether, since coming down from the mountain, she had really offended anyone. Could it be that Shen Duoduo was unwilling to give up and had caused this?
Lu Beiqin pressed harder on the gas. “Hold on tight!”
In the next instant, the car shot forward. Shen Chutang instinctively braced herself, but the cars behind them kept on in relentless pursuit.
Then she noticed there was only one car left behind them.
Something was wrong.
As expected, after two streets, another car suddenly burst out from a side road, nearly slamming into their rear!
Lu Beiqin floored the accelerator and narrowly avoided it, but there were too many cars on the road, making a crash all too easy. Worse still, a pedestrian street lay beside them, so there was no way to lure the cars there.
Shen Chutang immediately took out her phone and a device. In no time, the small phone transformed into a portable computer. Her ten fingers flew across the tiny keyboard, and a digital map page appeared at once before her eyes.
“At the next traffic light, turn left.”
Lu Beiqin did not hesitate and followed her instructions at once.
“At the next intersection, turn left again, then go straight all the way.”
What Shen Chutang had brought up was the real-time traffic map. It clearly showed congestion, roadworks, and other conditions along the route, allowing Lu Beiqin to drive forward unhindered.
But the two cars behind them still clung tightly to their tail. Not only that, more vehicles were joining them.
Shen Chutang typed rapidly, her expression grave. “Lu Beiqin, something doesn’t feel right.”
