Chapter 71: Thank You, My Dear Husband
Shen Chutang pushed open the door and saw Lu Beiqin in the living room, reading a financial magazine. She approached quietly, “You’re not working the night shift today?”
“Mm. You’re back so late?”
Shen Chutang recounted what had just happened. “Imagine, they actually thought of making me stay in the storage room while they moved here!”
Lu Beiqin looked at her. “Do you need help?”
“Of course not.”
No sooner had she spoken than her senior brother’s call flashed across her mind. Could it be that Lu Beiqin possessed some hidden strength she didn’t know about?
She glanced at him. “Do you know? The Jiang family has run off with the money!”
Lu Beiqin’s expression remained calm. “Which Jiang family?”
“The man who bullied me at the bar last time—his name is Jiang Han.”
Lu Beiqin frowned and pondered for a moment. “Understood. Next time I see him, I’ll call the police.”
Shen Chutang was speechless.
Forget it, she shouldn’t have asked!
She sprawled on the sofa, and her stomach grumbled in protest. After leaving school, she’d gone straight to the Shen house and spent all this time arguing, so she hadn’t eaten. Now she was starving.
Lu Beiqin, of course, heard her. “What would you like to eat?”
Shen Chutang had planned to cook for herself but was unexpectedly delighted that Lu Beiqin volunteered to make her food. “Anything I want?”
She really hadn’t misjudged when she chose him!
“If I can cook it.”
“Tomato, shrimp, and egg noodles!”
Lu Beiqin set the magazine aside. “Wait here.”
“Thank you!”
He glanced at her—she lay on the sofa, her hands unconsciously tugging up her shirt so that her slender, fair waist was exposed, though she hadn’t noticed. He looked away. Did this woman not understand the risks of sharing a room with a single man? Yet she spoke and acted so ambiguously.
The phone chimed—her master was calling.
“Master!”
“A few days ago, Old Wei complained to me, saying you made him lead his team to teach a bunch of high school seniors. Hard work, no hardship pay?”
Lying on the sofa, Shen Chutang explained, “Master, that’s a false accusation! Grandpa Wei himself handed me that hot potato, I only asked him for help, and now he’s complaining behind my back. I won’t make him beggar’s chicken anymore!”
Her master, Yin Fengmian, lowered his voice. “You’ll even pluck the flowers he’s painstakingly grown!”
Shen Chutang laughed. Only her master understood.
Finally, Yin Fengmian asked, “Where’s your man?”
This was a case of perfect timing.
Shen Chutang immediately pointed her phone at the kitchen. “He’s cooking for me! Isn’t he the very picture of a good husband?”
“Is that so?”
Seeing her master’s skepticism, Shen Chutang went into the kitchen and deliberately acted spoiled. “Lu Beiqin, I’m hungry. Feed me.”
Lu Beiqin saw Yin Fengmian on the phone and played along, picking up a piece of meat. “Careful, it’s hot.”
Shen Chutang took a bite, instantly scalded and wrinkling her brows. “It’s so hot!”
Lu Beiqin, seeing her eyes water, held out his hand. “Quick, spit it out.”
But Shen Chutang stubbornly shook her head, swallowed, and fanned her tongue. “It’s so hot, Lu Beiqin.”
Her speech was muffled, making her sound pitiful.
Lu Beiqin gently lifted her chin and blew softly on her lips. “Is it better now?”
Shen Chutang looked up and accidentally met his deep, dark eyes—profound and wise. She nodded dazedly. “Mm. Thank you, my good husband.”
Lu Beiqin gazed at her silently.
Yin Fengmian, unable to bear watching any longer, hung up. Young lovers, indeed.
With her master no longer checking up on her, Shen Chutang breathed a sigh of relief and smiled. “That braised pork was delicious. I want another piece!”
Lu Beiqin placed his large hand over her face and pushed her away. “Stop acting cute.”
Even with her face covered, Shen Chutang protested, “Who’s acting cute? I just want a bite of meat!”
Finally, the noodles were ready. Lu Beiqin brought a bowl to the dining table. Shen Chutang glanced at it. “Just one bowl? Aren’t you eating?”
“I already ate.”
She didn’t press further and finished the large bowl of noodles on her own.
“Lu Beiqin, honestly, I’m glad it’s you.”
Lu Beiqin looked up, knowing he wasn’t one for words. Shen Chutang didn’t expect him to answer every time.
“If it were anyone else, I doubt I could live this kind of separate but shared dining life.”
“Mm.”
Lu Beiqin replied quietly, watching as she moved on to cherries after the noodles. Her lips quickly took on a rosy hue, tempting one to take a bite.
Noticing his gaze, Shen Chutang boldly offered him a cherry, dangling it before his lips. “Here.”
Lu Beiqin grabbed her hand, his eyes deep. “Shen Chutang!”
“What—what’s wrong? Don’t you like cherries?”
He stared at her red lips, emotions surging in his eyes but forcibly restrained. “Do you know the consequences of what you’re doing?”
Shen Chutang tilted her head in confusion. “What?”
The next second, Lu Beiqin suddenly pressed his lips to hers.
