Chapter 95: What Awful Timing
“Um… well…” Zhang Shen saw Huang Wanting hesitating and stammering, and felt that this sly little girl must still be hiding something. He said, “You look so mischievous. I’m sure you’re keeping something from me. If you don’t come clean, I can’t give you back what you want.”
“Then I’ll tell the truth,” Huang Wanting muttered, pouting at him.
“Go on, then.”
“I don’t really know what I was thinking back then. I just figured that anyone who was out so late and not even at school couldn’t be much of a student, so instead of mailing the letter to you, I thought it would be better to deliver it straight to your principal. So I…”
At that moment, Zhang Shen’s impression of the girl before him could only be described as utterly baffling. What kind of logic was that supposed to be?
“If you think I’m not a good person, then why did you still dare to come see me alone?”
Zhang Shen asked, shaking his head at Huang Wanting.
“But this is still on campus! You wouldn’t dare do anything outrageous here, would you?”
“Not necessarily.”
With a sudden burst of mischief, Zhang Shen snatched the dagger from Huang Wanting and pinned her against the wall.
“What are you doing?”
Clearly, Huang Wanting had never expected Zhang Shen to make such a move. It was far beyond anything she had imagined.
“Didn’t I say not necessarily? Look at you—you’re so pretty I’m almost losing control.”
Huang Wanting had never seen anything like this before. She burst into tears and said to Zhang Shen, “Big brother, I really just came to get my card. Please let me go! If I lose that card, I’ll be dead.”
Zhang Shen himself was not a lecherous man, but seeing how frightened Huang Wanting was only made him more interested in the origins of the gold card.
“I’m the kind of person who doesn’t rob money…”
Before Zhang Shen could finish, a familiar voice sounded from behind him.
“Zhang Shen, I never thought you were this kind of person!”
He turned around and saw that it was Wang Ying.
“Wang Ying, why are you back already?”
“Don’t call me by my name. I don’t want to know you right now.”
That night was destined for Zhang Shen to offend two women.
“This… it’s not what you think…”
How could Zhang Shen have known that although he had spoken without any malicious intent, Wang Ying had happened to overhear every word as she passed by?
It turned out that Wang Ying had just returned to school after eating dinner at home. She did not want to go back to the dorm yet, so she had decided to take a walk in the park first. Unexpectedly, she had stumbled upon this scene, and it had instantly filled her with anger.
Unfortunately, Zhang Shen had no way of knowing any of that.
“Back then I was blind. From now on, let’s just pretend we don’t know each other.”
With that, Wang Ying turned to leave.
Seeing this, Zhang Shen hurried forward and grabbed her arm. “Wait and listen to my explanation. There’s a reason for this. It really was a special circumstance.”
But Wang Ying was in no mood to hear him out. She yanked her arm free and headed straight for the dormitory.
Watching her retreating figure, Zhang Shen felt at a loss. He had only meant to tease Huang Wanting a little, and yet somehow Wang Ying had misunderstood him. Wouldn’t that only deepen the rift between him and the girl?
Just as Zhang Shen was still thinking about how to make amends, Huang Wanting walked up behind him and said, “Big brother, the young lady’s already gone. If you want to go after her, hurry up. If you’re a moment too late, things may not end well. If you’re willing to trust me, I can testify for you.”
Looking at Huang Wanting’s big, blinking eyes, Zhang Shen did not know why, but at that moment he trusted her completely.
“Are you really willing to go with me?”
“Of course. But I have one condition. If this sister forgives you, you have to give the gold card back to me.”
“Deal.”
Zhang Shen nodded.
Although the gold card concealed many secrets, compared with the simple friendship he shared with Wang Ying, it meant little.
“Then let’s hurry.”
At that point, Huang Wanting looked even more excited than Zhang Shen.
When they arrived below the girls’ dormitory, Zhang Shen said to Huang Wanting, “This is the girls’ dormitory, so I can’t really go up. Go inside and find a girl named Wang Ying, then ask her to come down. If she refuses, explain everything to her face.”
“Don’t worry!” Huang Wanting patted her chest confidently.
Using her school ID card, Huang Wanting made it to the fourth floor, but she had no idea which room Wang Ying lived in. Just then, she happened to see Ye Qiong coming down the stairs, so she quickly stepped forward and asked, “Hello, may I ask you about someone?”
Faced with a stranger’s question, Ye Qiong was naturally wary. After all, there were too many unsettled things in the world these days. If even people like Zhang Shen could get into school, then wouldn’t every sow in the world be able to climb a tree?
“Go ahead,” she said.
“Do you know a girl named Wang Ying?”
When someone was asking after her roommate’s whereabouts, Ye Qiong did not rush to answer Huang Wanting. Instead, she cleverly held something back.
She glanced at the school badge hanging from Huang Wanting’s neck and saw that she was actually in the same class. That made Ye Qiong a little uneasy. She had been in that class for four years, and yet it felt as though she had never seen this girl before.
“The girl you’re talking about—was she kind of chubby, with glasses?”
Ye Qiong deliberately described Wang Ying’s appearance to Huang Wanting, though she made it sound absolutely dreadful. Hearing the description, Huang Wanting was convinced the woman she had seen only minutes earlier could not possibly be the same person.
“You mean Wang Ying?” she asked.
“Yes, of course! Who did you think I meant?”
Feeling that Huang Wanting did not believe her, Ye Qiong raised her voice.
“Fine then.”
After Huang Wanting turned and left, Ye Qiong returned to the dorm and quickly asked Wang Ying, “Xiao Ying, have you offended someone outside?”
Wang Ying, looking utterly bewildered, asked, “No, why?”
“If not, then why did someone just come looking for you? She was wearing our school badge too. The strange thing is, the badge said she was from our class, but I’ve never seen her before. Don’t you think that’s odd?”
“A girl?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. What, was it supposed to be a boy?”
It was no wonder Ye Qiong reacted like that. After all, Wang Ying had not described the matter clearly.
“What did that girl look like?”
“You mean her? She was actually quite pretty. Big eyes. I didn’t really look at anything else that closely.”
Listening to Ye Qiong’s description, Wang Ying could not help murmuring to herself, “Could it be her?”
