Chapter 53: The Truth Unveiled
However, unlike Chen Rong, Su Jin was not so astute, and instead asked, “Sister, I want to know what’s causing my brother-in-law’s illness.”
“Out!”
This was the first time Zhang Shen had ever seen Su Ping speak with such severity.
Su Jin had no choice but to obediently leave the room.
“Divine Doctor, you can speak now.”
Seeing that only the mayor and his wife were present, Zhang Shen finally opened his mouth. “Actually, Mayor Ye’s illness isn’t some grave disaster. The root cause lies in a longing of the heart—a wish that has never been fulfilled.”
Ye Gang hadn’t expected Zhang Shen to be able to discern his innermost thoughts. But was the wish Zhang Shen spoke of truly the same as his own?
“What is it that I long for?” he asked.
“Children.”
Those two words struck deep into the hearts of both Ye Gang and Su Ping. Indeed, the matter of children had long been a source of pain between them. Back when Ye Gang was thirty, Su Ping, then twenty-five, had already become pregnant.
At that time, Ye Gang took meticulous care of her every day. But fate intervened. One night, Ye Gang was out entertaining guests and didn’t return until deep into the night. That evening, a wild storm raged outside. Su Ping tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep.
In the small hours, she vaguely heard a knock at the door, thinking it was Zhang Shen returning without his key. She got out of bed to open the door. But as she passed through the living room, her foot slipped, and she fell heavily to the floor, crying out in pain.
Just then, Ye Gang, still in a drunken stupor, happened to open the door.
The moment he saw Su Ping on the ground, the alcohol in his system seemed to evaporate all at once.
“Wife, what’s wrong?”
“Ah...the child...my...child...”
Ye Gang hurriedly dialed for emergency services, but by the time Su Ping was rushed to the hospital, it was already too late. With Ye Gang’s consent, the doctors made the difficult choice to save the mother.
From that day on, the subject of children became something neither of them wished to mention. What’s more, after that incident, Su Ping never conceived again.
Ye Gang turned to Zhang Shen. “How did you know this?”
“It was quite simple, actually. I deduced it from your vomit.”
“That?”
Su Ping was stunned. All the doctors who had come before had run dozens of high-tech tests, yet found nothing. Zhang Shen had merely sniffed the vomit and immediately knew the cause. It was nothing short of magical.
In truth, Zhang Shen had already seen and smelled such vomit from John. There was a faint, elusive aura about it—one not fully formed. Most importantly, it lingered only within Ye Gang’s body, posing no threat to his life. Later, when Zhang Shen saw Ye Gang in person, he employed his soul-seeing technique to probe deeper and found his answer.
“Now that Mayor Ye is out of danger, I should take my leave.”
Just as Zhang Shen was preparing to depart, Ye Gang and Su Ping exchanged a glance. Su Ping instantly understood her husband’s thoughts and quickly called out to Zhang Shen.
“Divine Doctor, please wait. I have one more request.”
“What is it?”
“Since you know that having a child is our greatest wish, please, Divine Doctor, grant us a remedy, so that we may one day enjoy the happiness of family.”
“This truly is a deed of great merit. I shall help you.”
Zhang Shen walked to the bedside and whispered softly into Ye Gang’s ear.
Ye Gang, lying in bed, seemed to be quite satisfied, nodding repeatedly in agreement.
After that, Zhang Shen made to leave. Ye Gang said to Su Ping, “Please see the doctor out for me.”
“Mayor Ye, do rest well. I believe that after tonight, you’ll make a full recovery. All the best!”
The first half of her words sounded like the usual well-wishes given to a patient, but the last phrase—“all the best”—seemed to carry a deeper meaning. Su Ping thought she would ponder it more carefully later.
She opened the door to find Su Jin and Chen Rong still waiting outside. She said to Chen Rong, “I’m terribly sorry to have kept Principal Chen waiting.”
“Sister, how’s my brother-in-law? What is his illness, really?”
Su Ping didn’t answer Su Jin’s question, instead continuing, “We really have to thank Doctor Zhang this time. Without him, the outcome might have been very different.”
Chen Rong felt a quiet satisfaction—clearly, bringing Zhang Shen to Ye Gang’s house had been the right call.
“Madam Su, please, don’t mention it. Mayor Ye serves as the mayor of Yuehu City; it’s our duty to serve him. Now that he’s safe, we’ll take our leave.”
“Very well. Su Jin and I will see you out.”
As the four descended the stairs, they noticed that Su Jin, who earlier had been brimming with anger, now meekly followed behind Zhang Shen, and Su Ping no longer wore the traces of tears on her face. Could it be that this young man had truly healed the mayor?
“My husband’s condition has greatly improved thanks to the Divine Doctor’s treatment,” Su Ping announced. “However, he is still weak and unable to get out of bed. I must ask everyone to please disperse.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Zhang Shen interjected, “Please wait, everyone, I have something to say.”
Today, Zhang Shen had been uniquely favored; now, he stood taller than any doctor present, and none dared offend him.
“Doctor Li Tanghuang, please stay. I have a word for you.”
Li Tanghuang had hoped to slip away unnoticed, but to his surprise, Zhang Shen singled him out. At that moment, Li’s legs began to tremble.
“Doctor Li, now that I’ve cured the mayor, what do you think should be done?”
Li Tanghuang dared not even lift his head, let alone meet Zhang Shen’s eyes. He knew well that Zhang Shen would show no mercy this time.
At that moment, an elderly man stepped forward—his badge read: Wu Wenhao, Vice President of Tianyuan Hospital.
“Doctor Li, considering your medical skills need improvement, you need not report to the hospital for work from tomorrow onward.”
The crowd gasped in surprise at Wu Wenhao’s words, though, upon reflection, it was only to be expected. Now that Zhang Shen had cured the mayor, he was clearly in favor, and Tianyuan Hospital could hardly continue to tolerate someone who had offended him.
Li Tanghuang collapsed to the floor, feeling as though his life was over.
Just then, the foreigner John, having changed clothes, emerged and, seeing Li Tanghuang slumped on the ground, asked, “What’s wrong with this doctor? He looks like he’s gone mad.”
Though John himself had no idea what was happening, everyone else burst into laughter.
With her husband’s health restored, Su Ping felt free to let go of her worries and arranged for a driver to take Chen Rong and Zhang Shen home.
On the way, Chen Rong asked, “May I ask you a question?”
Zhang Shen assumed she wanted to ask about Ye Gang’s illness, but this time, he guessed wrong.
