Chapter 103: The Front Passenger Seat Is Mine
On the other end of the line, Jiang Muyun didn’t give Zhang Shen the slightest chance to explain himself, and instead spoke directly to Mu Qiao: “Sister Mu, where are we now?”
Mu Qiao, of course, knew exactly what was going on.
“Miss, we’re almost at Yinhu Road.”
With that, Mu Qiao deliberately honked the horn a few times.
Zhang Shen knew that from Yinhu Road, there were only two intersections left before reaching Zheng Tiande’s house. Clearly, this girl really had driven far away. At this point, even pleading with her would be futile.
Just as Zhang Shen was sinking into despair, Jiang Muyun let out a playful laugh on the other end of the phone.
“But you big oaf—if you say something that pleases me, I might just have Sister Mu turn the car around. Otherwise, you’ll have to figure things out yourself!”
To be honest, Zhang Shen could hardly believe Jiang Muyun would suddenly show such mercy and come back for him. But since she said so, perhaps there was still hope.
“My dear Yun, come back quickly!”
“How tacky! And who’s your ‘dear Yun’?”
Left with no other choice, Zhang Shen tried again: “My mistake—it should be the most beautiful Yun in the world. Please hurry back and pick me up! I really don’t want to walk.”
“So lazy!”
Jiang Muyun couldn’t help but scoff on the other end.
“All right, I won’t make things harder for you. Wait there for one minute, Sister Mu and I will be right there.”
“One minute?”
Zhang Shen wondered if he’d misheard, but less than twenty seconds later, a Buick rolled up right in front of him.
“Unbelievable—so fast?”
As soon as he spoke, a small head popped out of the car window.
“Big oaf, aren’t I punctual?”
Hearing her words, Zhang Shen could hardly believe that a journey which usually took over twenty minutes had been accomplished in under twenty seconds today.
While he was still puzzling over this, a familiar voice sounded behind him.
“Brother Zhang!”
Turning at the sound, Zhang Shen saw Meng Ran and Wang Ying walking out hand in hand. Even Jiang Muyun was stunned by this sight.
“Hmm!”
Although he’d heard Meng Ran brag about the progress of his relationship with Wang Ying over the past few days, seeing it with his own eyes truly struck Zhang Shen to the core.
“How are they here too?” Jiang Muyun hadn’t expected Meng Ran and Wang Ying to show up at this moment and turned to Zhang Shen for an answer.
Of course, Zhang Shen didn’t dare admit the real reason was to see Mu Qiao, the elegant older sister. So he lied: “Meng Ran needs to go to Wang Ying’s family’s dumpling shop, so I asked you to give him a ride. I was late because this fat guy held me up.”
At this, Jiang Muyun quickly got out of the car and said to Zhang Shen, “I’ll let you off this time. We’ll settle our account later.”
Then, her tone shifted completely as she turned to Wang Ying and Meng Ran, “Come on, get in!”
Meng Ran, not one to stand on ceremony, replied, “Sorry to trouble you and hold you up.”
Though Meng Ran spoke the truth, to Zhang Shen, hearing such words from the fat guy’s mouth always sounded a bit off. Fortunately, he didn’t continue.
“It’s no trouble, we’re going the same way anyway.”
Zhang Shen, standing by, really couldn’t figure out Jiang Muyun’s thinking. Zheng Tiande’s house and Wang Ying’s dumpling shop were in completely opposite directions, yet she claimed it was on the way—a rather unconvincing lie.
Meng Ran didn’t seem to care, but Wang Ying looked a bit uncomfortable.
“Zhang Shen, you take the front seat this time. I want to sit with Sister Ying.”
Jiang Muyun, sharp as ever, saw through Wang Ying’s little thoughts. Rather than let things get awkward later, she decided to switch seats now.
At her words, Wang Ying immediately smiled. Seeing Jiang Muyun’s deft arrangement and Wang Ying’s reaction, Zhang Shen couldn’t help but admire the little troublemaker.
“Since Miss has spoken, you’d better get in,” Mu Qiao said.
Zhang Shen hadn’t expected to be toyed with by this mistress and servant duo today, but there was nothing left for him to say.
Once all four were in the car, Mu Qiao stepped on the gas and headed first to Wang Ying’s family dumpling shop. The once quiet atmosphere quickly grew lively, thanks to Jiang Muyun’s mischievous spirit.
“Sister Ying, is this your boyfriend?”
At these words, Zhang Shen instinctively turned to look at Jiang Muyun, wondering why she insisted on stirring up more trouble by steering the conversation this way.
But Wang Ying didn’t shy away. She glanced at Meng Ran and answered slowly, “Yes.”
With Wang Ying’s confirmation, Jiang Muyun looked as delighted as a treasure hunter and immediately turned to Meng Ran.
“You’re quite impressive—how did you win Sister Ying over?”
Meng Ran knew he owed much of his success with Wang Ying to Zhang Shen, but faced with Jiang Muyun’s question, he had to tread carefully.
“Of course, I won her with sincerity!”
Truth be told, Jiang Muyun didn’t really care how Meng Ran had succeeded; she only wanted to use his answer as ammunition to tease Zhang Shen.
“So it seems Sister Ying is truly lucky—much better than some big oafs who only know how to freeload and can’t get a single proper thing done.”
Zhang Shen knew she was mocking him, but having already endured a dose of this couple’s public display, he couldn’t be bothered to retort.
Meanwhile, Mu Qiao drove steadily toward the dumpling shop, and soon they reached their first destination.
After Meng Ran and Wang Ying got out, they repeatedly thanked Jiang Muyun, completely ignoring Zhang Shen.
“Get out, move to the back—shotgun is mine!” Jiang Muyun suddenly yelled at Zhang Shen once Meng Ran and Wang Ying were out of earshot.
Zhang Shen couldn’t help but wonder if he had some karmic debt to Jiang Muyun from a past life, as every encounter with her seemed to end in bickering.
Of course, these thoughts stayed in his mind; he dared not act on them.
Soon, Zhang Shen obediently left the front seat and switched places with Jiang Muyun.
Mu Qiao started the car again, heading in the opposite direction. As they passed the school, Zhang Shen heard something from Jiang Muyun that made him want to throttle her.
“Do you know where we parked the car?”
Back at the school gates, Zhang Shen had already suspected something, but with everything that had happened with Meng Ran and Wang Ying, he’d forgotten all about it.
