As soon as the words were spoken, the sound of an ambulance siren echoed from downstairs, and several robust young men quickly pushed open the door and rushed in. “Did you call 911 just now? Where’s the patient?”

Zhang Shen raised his hand and pointed to the bed. The leading doctor was startled. “Wasn’t it supposed to be a stroke? Why is there so much blood?”

The atmosphere in the room was heavy, so Zhang Shen had no choice but to help move the patient downstairs himself, explaining as he did so, “The situation was urgent, so I performed some emergency procedures.”

“You’re a doctor?”

“Yes.”

“Which hospital are you from?”

“I’m not affiliated with any hospital.”

The young men, all either interns or residents in training, carried an air of arrogance and temper. Hearing his reply, one of them almost jumped out of his skin. “You’re a wandering practitioner and dared to perform an emergency procedure like this? Are you out of your mind?”

“These days are truly chaotic. More and more people call themselves doctors after reading a few medical books. If you mess around like this, who will be responsible if the patient doesn’t make it?” With that, he waved his hand, as if ready to wash his hands of the matter.

Zhang Shen had been in the city for over two months now and knew well how severe medical disputes had become. He wasn’t angry at their behavior, only offering a slight apologetic smile. “I’ve already discussed with these elders just now; should anything happen, they’ll only hold me accountable.”

The doctor swept a doubtful glance around. The room was filled with elderly people, all glaring at Zhang Shen as if he were an enemy. “The patient has no immediate family?”

“No. Aunt Shen’s parents passed away long ago, no siblings, and she never married…”

“Hmph!” An old man interrupted Jiang Muyun’s explanation, thumping his cane on the floor. “We are Xiao Shen’s family!”

“Alright, then you all sign a waiver.”

After much fuss, they finally managed to get the patient onto the ambulance. Zhang Shen felt utterly exhausted. Thankfully, he had intervened; otherwise, by the time they figured out what was happening, the patient might have been sent straight to the crematorium.

Yuehu City First People’s Hospital was one of the three best hospitals in the city, and the only public institution among them. When Zhang Shen first arrived in the city, he had applied for a job there, but was thrown out before he could finish his sentence.

Still, he learned about the hospital’s situation. The emergency room was always packed. Although strokes required immediate attention, you still had to wait your turn unless there were no other patients ahead. After all, every life is equal; no one’s life is more valuable than another’s.

Zhang Shen had expected they would have to wait a while for a doctor, but to his surprise, the elderly Mr. Hu went out for a moment and quickly returned, bringing with him a large group of doctors, with the highest-ranking among them being a department director.

“Where’s the patient? Hurry, send them to the emergency room!”

Liu Aiguo, before arriving, had already checked the arrival time and had more or less written the patient off. If not for Mr. Hu’s influence, he wouldn’t have bothered to come at all.

Doctors save the living; the dead are beyond concern.

He just wanted to quickly plug in the instruments and declare the patient dead, so as not to offend Mr. Hu but also not waste his own time.

However, as each device was connected, his eyes grew wider and wider, until he was nearly jumping in shock. “Heartbeat steady, breathing normal, the brain… the brain shows only a minimal amount of bleeding?”

He slapped his assistant on the back of the head. “Are you sure this patient wasn’t already treated by neurosurgery?”

“N-no, no,” stammered the young doctor who had brought the patient in. In truth, he felt he might have encountered something supernatural.

Liu Aiguo’s face darkened as he began a thorough examination. After finishing, his expression was ashen. Another slap landed on his assistant’s head. “If she’s already been treated, send her straight to the ward. Emergency time can’t be wasted like this—every minute is a life! Don’t you know?”

“She really hasn’t been treated!” The assistant clutched his head, nearly in tears.

Liu Aiguo glared. “If she wasn’t treated, how did she escape danger on her own?”

“Uh, no, actually, someone did administer emergency treatment—there was a person on their side who did it.”

“Mr. Hu?” Liu Aiguo was surprised. But that couldn’t be—Mr. Hu wasn’t trained in emergency medicine.

The assistant shook his head, denying the idea. “It was a young man…”

Liu Aiguo, face grim, followed the assistant out of the emergency room. He immediately spotted Zhang Shen sitting on a bench. While they were examining the patient, the group of elderly men and women had also arrived from Shunyi Hall, standing guard around Zhang Shen like jailers.

Seeing Liu Aiguo’s displeased expression, the old men and women pursed their lips and, in an instant, began to wail and lament, their fingers poking at the back of Zhang Shen’s head. Fortunately, he was tall; when he stood up, the elders couldn’t reach him.

“Director Liu.” Zhang Shen glanced at his name badge. “How’s the patient doing?”

“What do you think? Haven’t you seen the doctors’ faces? Oh Xiao Shen, how could you be so cruel, forcing us white-haired elders to see you, the black-haired youth, off…”

“You brat, you promised to take responsibility. Come… now I, Old Hu, will send you off myself!”

Zhang Shen sighed inwardly. He had already warned himself not to meddle, but in the end, he couldn’t resist and got himself into trouble. Fortunately, this was the emergency department; if the elders had trouble breathing, they could be rescued right away, saving him from bearing even more responsibility.

Liu Aiguo ignored their antics, fixing his gaze on Zhang Shen. “You performed the emergency treatment?”

“Yes.”

Liu Aiguo’s hands trembled. He never expected such a feat to be accomplished by a young man. His excitement twisted his expression even further.

Jiang Muyun was conflicted, but seeing Liu Aiguo’s predatory look, she suddenly jumped up, standing protectively in front of Zhang Shen, crying as she spread her arms wide. “I… I’ll take responsibility for Aunt Shen’s case, together with him!”

“Take responsibility for what!” Liu Aiguo impatiently brushed her aside, then tightly grasped Zhang Shen’s hands, his face filled with anticipation. “Young man, could you tell me—how on earth did you do it?”

“What?”

The mournful atmosphere in the corridor froze instantly. Old Hu’s raised cane stopped midair, and everyone stared at Liu Aiguo in astonishment. What did he mean by that? And a department director addressing this young man with honorifics—was the sun about to rise in the west?

Amid all the stiff gazes, Zhang Shen’s expression was the calmest. He smiled, relaxing just a bit. “It’s nothing remarkable, just luck. Since everything’s fine, I’ll take my leave now. I’m nearly late for work.” With that, he freed himself from Liu Aiguo’s grasp and turned to leave.

Liu Aiguo leapt up as if crazed. “Wait! May I ask where you’re employed, young man? Could you leave your phone number?”

As a doctor who had spent decades steeped in the medical world, he knew just how valuable a capable person could be. If Zhang Shen truly could control a stroke without surgery, bringing him into the hospital could dramatically increase patient survival rates.

It would be a huge boon for the hospital’s reputation.

If they could claim such a talent, perhaps the title of ‘one of the three best hospitals in Yuehu City’ could be upgraded to simply ‘the best.’
