Chapter 91: An Unexpected Turn of Events
Zhang Shen naturally did not take Meng Ran’s words seriously. With a look of disdain, he said, “Get lost. You’re already irritating me first thing in the morning.”
But Meng Ran did not care in the least. Instead, he plastered on a shameless grin and said, “Really, Brother Zhang. I’m not lying to you. Come on, let me show you.”
As he spoke, Meng Ran handed his phone to Zhang Shen.
Zhang Shen took it with some doubt and carefully examined the information displayed on the screen.
The Dragon-Tortoise Villa was renowned for its ability to turn ordinary dishes into something extraordinary, leaving people lingering long after the meal was over. Because of this, its reputation was excellent, and people often made special trips there. There were many rumors about the place. As for the owner, outsiders only knew that it was run by a man called Dragon Four. Beyond that, nothing was known. Very few diners could actually enter the establishment, but if one could offer a good suggestion for the villa, one would immediately receive a golden card...
Reading this, Zhang Shen unconsciously touched the golden card beneath his pillow.
“Hey! Brother Zhang, what are you thinking about?”
Just as Zhang Shen was still wondering whether the golden card from last night was the one mentioned online, Meng Ran’s interruption made him quickly pull his hand back.
Seeing the nervous look on Zhang Shen’s face, Meng Ran said, “Brother Zhang, you look so absent-minded. Don’t tell me you got that golden card?”
Faced with Meng Ran’s sudden question, Zhang Shen’s expression stiffened. After all, he still did not know whether he should tell Meng Ran about the card. But after careful thought, Zhang Shen still felt it best that, for now, only he himself knew about it.
“What nonsense are you spouting? Didn’t it say right here how precious that golden card is? I’ve never even been to that villa, so how could I possibly get one?”
Hearing this, Meng Ran chuckled and said, “I was only joking. Why are you so nervous? All right, it’s getting late. Let’s hurry to class!”
Whatever Meng Ran’s words were meant to mean, true or false, Zhang Shen did not want this fat man to keep pestering him about it. So when he heard that, he immediately replied offhandedly, “All right, let’s go!”
The two of them left the dormitory together and headed to school, only to unexpectedly run into Lu Ming and Hao Lei again.
“Brother Zhang, look. Isn’t that Teacher Lu and Teacher Hao up ahead? How come we keep seeing the two of them together these days?”
Zhang Shen rolled his eyes at Meng Ran and said, “If you were dating Wang Ying, you’d be the same.”
Only then did Meng Ran suddenly understand, and he blurted out loudly, “So the two of them are dating!”
That shout from Meng Ran made Zhang Shen feel as though he wanted nothing more than to dig a hole in the ground and crawl into it. Lu Ming and Hao Lei, who had been walking toward them hand in hand, had originally acted as if no one else was there, but at that shout, even they unconsciously put a little distance between themselves.
Seeing this, Zhang Shen gave Meng Ran a hard smack on the head.
“Fatty, can’t you lower your voice?”
Meng Ran turned back to look at Zhang Shen, his little eyes full of grievance. Lu Ming and Hao Lei had originally intended to greet them, but after seeing this scene, they could only choose to detour around them.
After Lu Ming and Hao Lei had passed, Zhang Shen said to Meng Ran, “Next time, can you not make such a fuss?”
Meng Ran did not say anything. He simply kept his head down and followed Zhang Shen all the way to the classroom.
Just as Zhang Shen sat down, Ye Qiong hurried over and said to him, “Wang Ying can’t come to class today. Handle it yourself!”
Only then did Zhang Shen realize that Wang Ying had not returned to school since last night. A trace of concern rose in his heart, and he asked, “Then where is she?”
“Oh? So you do know how to care about a girl. If you had cared a little earlier, none of this mess would have blown up.”
As Zhang Shen listened to Ye Qiong, his unease only grew. Could something have happened to Wang Ying?
“Just say it already! My dear Miss Ye, what happened to her?”
Actually, Ye Qiong was only deliberately prodding Zhang Shen’s nerves, so she said each word slowly and clearly: “This morning, Xiao Ying called to say she wasn’t feeling well and wanted to take the day off before reporting back to school tonight.”
“What’s wrong with her?”
Although Zhang Shen did not have romantic feelings for Wang Ying, as a seatmate, the most basic concern was still necessary.
“Hmph. You think you’re the only one in the whole world who knows how to treat illness? Don’t forget, all of us are going to be working in medicine and nursing in the future. Xiao Ying studies medicine herself; she should know her own condition. There’s no need for you to worry yourself over it.”
At this point, Zhang Shen finally understood that Ye Qiong had not forgotten what happened last night and had deliberately come over to get back at him. Still, since Wang Ying could manage it herself, that was enough to put him at ease.
“In that case, please return to your seat, Miss Ye.”
Hearing that Zhang Shen had only offered a few polite words and had not actually done anything, Ye Qiong could not help muttering, “What a heartless jerk. He broke Xiao Ying’s heart so badly, and yet he acts like nothing happened.”
Meanwhile, Meng Ran, for reasons no one knew, suddenly found himself seized by a burst of courage and said to Ye Qiong, “Sister Ye, Brother Zhang isn’t that kind of person...”
After hearing Meng Ran’s words, Zhang Shen and Ye Qiong both turned back at the same time, because neither of them had expected Meng Ran to stand up on his own.
Ye Qiong only smiled without saying much. Zhang Shen, however, said, “Fatty, I’ve got to give you a thumbs-up!”
After a cold snort, Ye Qiong returned to her seat. Zhang Shen looked at the empty desk beside him and suddenly felt that today’s classes were moving much more slowly than usual.
Before he knew it, only the final lesson of the morning remained, and what was more, it was Lu Ming’s physical education class. The students had originally been in high spirits, eager to go outside and make a commotion.
But just as Lu Ming stepped into the classroom and was about to lead the students out for activities, a graceful figure in a red dress appeared at the doorway.
“Due to a sudden physical discomfort, the PE teacher can’t teach this class. It’s been changed to my class.”
The students beneath the podium looked at one another, and in the end all eyes fell on Lu Ming.
Lu Ming looked at the students, then back at Hao Lei, and could only clutch his stomach in a pretense of distress. “Class, I’m sorry. Teacher isn’t feeling very well today, so I just wanted to let you know that this class will be taken over by Teacher Hao. If there’s a chance next time, I’ll have Teacher Hao return it to me.”
The students’ eyes were full of disbelief. Who didn’t know Teacher Hao’s temperament? To snatch a class from her hands would probably be harder than ascending to heaven.
After that, Lu Ming left the classroom. At the doorway, he exchanged a look with Hao Lei, then hurried off.
Once Lu Ming had gone, Hao Lei stepped up to the podium. No one knew why she had suddenly switched classes with him.
