27 The Blood of the Dragon King! (Please keep reading!)
“What are you doing?”
“Don’t you understand? I’m playing with fire.”
Woman, don’t come near me—you’ll get burned.
Having spat out the wax, Herbert was now burning his index finger with a flame, continuously experiencing the sensation of being scorched.
He truly felt no pain.
Only warmth.
It seemed he had genuinely become immune to fire.
“You’re right~ You’re now immune to elemental fire damage,” the eerie voice said.
“Of course, if a blazing, molten ball of lava comes hurtling at you, I still suggest you dodge it. I don’t want to lose an ally so easily~”
“Ah? Oh!” Herbert pondered deeply, realizing both the power and limitations of this ability.
Its strength went without saying.
Fire immunity was a feat anyone could imagine, allowing for many creative exploits.
Immune to flames and high temperatures, yet the explosive damage and shockwaves resulting from intense heat offered no mitigation at all.
Truly powerful, but with an equally apparent drawback.
A staff made purely of flames could strike him without leaving a scratch; he might even regenerate some health afterward.
But if it were a red-hot iron rod, that was a whole different matter.
“Boy, enjoy yourself more! Don’t be too greedy~”
An incredibly strange scene: the evil god representing greed and malevolence was advising a paladin to know when to stop.
“You should know, aside from fire elementals, even demons only those high-ranking ones who inherit the primal demon’s blood possess complete fire immunity.”
“I don’t feel lacking at all,” Herbert said with a smirk, insisting he wasn’t that greedy.
Honestly, when have I ever been greedy?
“By the way, Nenasia, what exactly did I get this time? The Dragon King’s curse?”
That merciless stomp made Herbert suspect he’d been cursed by the one-eyed dragon.
Damn, that was harsh!
But this time, the evil god gave a completely different answer: “No, this isn’t a curse but a bloodline inheritance.”
“Unlike humans, dragons don’t leave behind writings or scriptures. They embed their legacy into their bloodline, and the next generation of dragons automatically comprehend the knowledge within their veins as they mature.”
“Generation after generation, the dragons’ inheritance accumulates over time. As long as the bloodline is pure enough, they master most of that knowledge by adulthood.”
Though no longer rulers of the world, dragons remain incredibly powerful.
Normally, an adult dragon’s strength would be legendary!
Of course, such an extraordinary gift comes at a price.
Pureblood dragons have remarkably poor reproduction rates within their species. A dragon couple might go centuries without producing a clutch of eggs.
Dragonlings grow over millennia, facing countless dangers that make premature death all too common.
So dragons are powerful, but purebloods remain a modest, fluctuating population.
“This inheritance you obtained is even more special.”
Nenasia spoke softly, “Even among dragons, only those with such a pure bloodline that it reverts to ancestral traits qualify for this top-tier legacy—the blood of the Dragon King.”
At this, Nenasia felt somewhat moved and teasingly mocked Herbert’s incredible luck.
How on earth did this guy get his hands on such materials?
Extracting such treasures from monsters should be nearly impossible.
Yet, Herbert acquired two in just two days.
Is that reasonable?
“How do you think the power you gained is merely fire immunity? No, that’s just the surface.”
“The true ability is to draw strength from the flames!”
“Not only can fire not burn your flesh, but it makes your body stronger!”
Herbert already sensed this without Nenasia’s emphasis.
Although faint, he felt his scorched finger growing more powerful.
His body was growing stronger.
So, I can truly be myself in the fire?
“Most importantly, this inheritance isn’t a one-time thing. You’ve already gained recognition from the bloodline. When you collect more dragon monster materials, you can obtain the inheritance again.”
“Tch, I suspect you’ve secretly gotten cozy with the goddess of luck!”
Even the evil god couldn’t help but sigh.
This lucky fellow.
Perhaps he truly bears the blessing of that damned goddess of fortune!
“Hmph!”
Nenasia suddenly grew wary, realizing she must not let more gods notice Herbert.
No one’s stealing him from me!
After pondering a while, Herbert stopped scorching his flesh—the candle’s flame was too small!
“Maybe I should set a big fire in the monastery? No, that would be too conspicuous.”
“Or perhaps I can find a way in the alien prison?”
As he mused, Herbert recalled the Dragon King he’d seen in the inheritance space.
“By the way, Nenasia, do you remember anything about that name—‘The Dragonborn’s End, the Everlasting Flame, Eternal Night Before Dawn’?”
“Uh... Three people?”
“Of course not. It’s one.”
“Just kidding, I definitely recognize him. So the one you saw in the inheritance space was him!”
Nenasia’s surprise made Herbert raise an eyebrow.
“Is he powerful?”
“Oh, very powerful~” Nenasia chuckled, “He’s one of the few idiots who can’t face reality yet is strong enough.”
“With the body of a saint, he defied the gods and even killed true deities—an infamous godslayer.”
Herbert was not surprised by the Dragon King’s feats. After witnessing such a terrifying form, one could imagine the brutal battles.
“And what about him now...?”
“Dead! Without a grave!”
“This fellow, after killing the gods, accumulated enough divinity and godhood to attempt to ascend as the Dragon God. But he was betrayed by his own kind, fought three true gods who came to slay him, and ultimately fell in disgrace.”
“By the way, the one who betrayed him was later betrayed and jointly executed by those three true gods.”
“Since then, the dragon clan has had no new gods, and no dragon dares to attempt godhood.”
Herbert blinked, somewhat puzzled.
He hadn’t expected that such a terrifying figure would end in such a tragic fate.
This world is dangerous indeed!
“Don’t worry~”
As Herbert reflected, Nenasia’s sweet voice whispered near his ear:
“When I break free from my seal, no one in this world will be able to harm you~”
“Heh, I look forward to that day.”
.
.
The next day.
“Herbert, come here, let me bite... let me smell you!”
“Huh? What are you trying to do?”
Herbert eyed the red-haired hungry dragon in the cage cautiously and took half a step back.
Miss Evil God, can we make a deal?
Could you come protect me a little earlier?
These monster girls really look terrifying...
They seem genuinely eager for my body!
