Chapter 1: Lord Yang
“Anran, you must be joking, right? You suffered internal injuries in the Water Lord’s treasury as well. How could you possibly endure a long journey in your current state? If anything happens to you, how would I ever explain it to Sister Hualian or your mother?” Naturally, Fu Yuzhen would not agree, but nothing could change Ji Anran’s resolve. “Since the requirement for Mingyu Manor is for handsome men and beautiful women, my brother and I are the best candidates. Only the two of us are truly suitable, isn’t that so, Master? I’ve always acted on my own whims, but since meeting this troublesome fellow, I’ve wanted to change myself.”
“If I truly wish to be with this troublesome man, then Gu Zhenzhen must be restored to her former self. I don’t know what awaits on this journey, so three people will suffice—no more. Gu Zhenzhen must go. Who knows what might happen if she stays behind at Su Yi Tower? If she’s by my side, at least I can handle any problems that arise.”
Mei Lengning and Cheng Zhumeng found themselves at a loss for words. Their senior sister had sent them to help their little junior, but in the end, they had done nothing. Naturally, they felt miserable about it. Of course, Ji Anran understood what was on her sisters’ minds. “Second Sister, Fourth Sister, I’m already delighted that you came to see me. Since the day I joined the sect, Master and my senior sisters have always worried about me. Now, I can finally accomplish something on my own. Shouldn’t you feel happy for me?”
Cheng Zhumeng gazed at her little junior as if seeing her truly for the first time. Indeed, the girl had always been independent. Since she was so determined, what more could a senior do? “Very well, then. Fourth Sister and I will return now. But you must eat the pastries your Third Sister made for you. It’s her token of affection. If you don’t accept them, she’ll blame you when she finds out.”
She then glanced at Liang Xi, who, even after all that had happened, remained steady and unchanged—a rare trait indeed. “You, I’ve always trusted. Brother Liang, you did so much for our Illusion Spirit Realm. Whether it was helping against Wan Ruyu or forging sisterhood with our eldest, we will always remember your kindness. And don’t worry about Brother Zhuang—if he’s ever in danger, we’ll help him at once.”
“We understand your worries. Though your senior brother is powerful, Twin Radiance Palm takes a heavy toll on him. Brother Zhuang surely knows this well, though he’s never spoken of it. In any case, you two are as close to us as family.”
“That’s right, little junior. The important thing now is to go to Su Yi Tower and inform Gu Zhenzhen. I’m sure she’ll gladly go with you.” Mei Lengning was reluctant to part with her junior. Ever since she joined three years ago, Mei had felt a special bond with her.
“Indeed. Friends, this is no place to linger. Whatever we have to say, we should do so outside.” Fu Yuzhen gathered the relics of the Water Spirit line. It was somewhat melancholy—after all, the Water Spirit and Wangchuan lines shared the same origin, yet look how things had ended. “Junior Ling, I know you always wished to become head of the Four Great Water Clans. Today, I promise you—I’ll help you fulfill that wish. Just wait and see.”
The Four Great Water Clans had a long history; if neglected, trouble would surely arise. When they returned, Fu Yuzhen would have Mo Qianchen and Ji Yin take charge here. They were devoted to each other, and as a teacher, she had little else to give them. The only thing she could offer was Lingbo Bay—so there was no need to move the weapons and books; they could remain here.
Their discussions finished, the company left Lingbo Bay and returned to Wangchuan. When Fu Yuzhen explained her intentions to Mo Qianchen and Ji Yin, the couple was deeply moved. They had long harbored feelings for one another, but sect rules had kept them apart. Now, their teacher’s blessing and the charge of guarding Lingbo Bay recognized their bond. Who would have thought that Gu Zhenzhen’s injury would bring about such a result? How could they not rejoice?
“All right, enough. No need to make a show of it. Haven’t you noticed how sad your little junior is? There will be time enough for displays of affection later. For now, prepare well—you’ll leave for Lingbo Bay soon. The longer we wait, the more complications may arise, which would not be good. From now on, you’ll have to overcome difficulties on your own.”
“As your teacher, I know the old rules were harsh. But from today forward, you needn’t follow them. Qianchen, I suppose you’ve often complained about me in your heart? But if I hadn’t been strict, would you have achieved so much?”
At her words, Mo Qianchen and Ji Yin knelt in gratitude. “Master, your kindness can never be repaid, not even with our lives. Rest assured, we will protect the Water Spirit line and ensure the legacy of the Four Great Water Clans continues.”
Ji Xia and Ji Zhi had grown up with their elder sister, who was not only their sister but had often been like a mother to them. Now, facing her departure, they were overcome with sorrow. Though they had much to say, not a word would come. Ji Zhi, the youngest and closest to her sister, threw herself into Ji Yin’s arms, whispering soft words even she probably didn’t understand.
The three Ji sisters were a renowned sight at Wangchuan—not only skilled in martial arts, but also clever and resourceful. Now, with one gone, all felt the loss. Among the disciples of the Twelve Peaks, unity was paramount. “Little junior, don’t worry. If anything goes wrong, do you think we, as your brothers and sisters, would just stand by?”
“Third Brother, stop lecturing her. I think Brother Liang is much more reliable than you. Honestly, entrusting our sister to you—none of us are willing, but what can we do? She likes you so much, even if we don’t, what difference does it make?”
Years ago, their elder sister was gravely injured for this man. If not for their teacher’s timely intervention, she would have perished. And where was Third Brother then? He was practicing his blade, oblivious to her fate. Though years had passed, Ji Xia and Ji Zhi had never forgotten. Mo Qianchen, for his part, never dared face the two sisters alone.
The past thus revived, Mo Qianchen had no words. Obsessed with martial arts, he had always cared for Ji Yin, but not as much as his training. Only when he realized her injuries were his fault did his feelings burst forth. He understood at last: without Ji Yin, all the martial prowess in the world would bring him no joy. From then on, she became his priority.
Ji Yin would not let her beloved be put on the spot. Turning to Ji Zhi, she said, “Little sister, don’t say such things. It’s all in the past. Third Brother never wronged me—he was at a critical point in his training that day. If he’d stopped, he would have died. I’ve explained this to you many times. Why won’t you believe it?”
“There’s nothing else for me to say. Before I leave, remember this: if you harm Third Brother, you harm me. My heart has always belonged to him alone. No one else matters. Third Brother, let’s go.”
This time, the eldest sister truly left. Who knew when they’d meet again—perhaps never. Ji Zhi was filled with regret. If only she’d spoken more tenderly earlier, but now it was too late. “Sister!” Ji Yin looked back at her sisters on Celestial Maiden Peak, smiled faintly, and turned with her beloved. Dangers unknown awaited them, but Ji Yin was full of resolve; as long as she was with Third Brother, she could face anything.
Liang Xi and Ji Anran had little time to waste. Their next task was to take Gu Zhenzhen to find Mingyu Manor—a place so well hidden that no one had located it for years.
After several days of rest, Gu Zhenzhen’s complexion had improved. When she saw the travel-worn Liang Xi and Ji Anran, she was deeply moved. These friends had gone to such lengths for her; even if they failed, what did it matter? She truly did not care.
“Miss Gu, we haven’t come away empty-handed. Only Mingyu Manor’s Falling Rosy Jade can heal your injuries. This time, we must trouble you to join us on this journey.” Though it was unfair to her, there was no other way.
These words filled Gu Zhenzhen with joy. She had always hoped to travel the world with Brother Liang Xi, and now her wish would come true. Even if dangers lay ahead, what was there to fear? “Of course, I’m willing—no matter where, I’ll go.”
Gu Zhenzhen could not hide her feelings, but Gu Chuan sensed the journey would not be simple. After questioning them, he learned they were set on Mingyu Manor. “That place is extremely secret. Few in the world know its location. Even if I wanted to help, it’s impossible.”
“Elder Gu Chuan, please don’t say that. It’s my fault Zhenzhen is in this state. No matter what, I must restore her. Mingyu Manor is secret, but if we’re determined, we’ll find a lead. You needn’t worry. We already have a plan, and we’ll set out in two days, which gives us time to prepare.”
“Very well. If you need anything—people, energy stones, anything—just ask. You risk so much for my daughter; I’ll never forget your kindness. If not for urgent matters, I’d go with you myself. After all, one more person is always helpful, isn’t it?” Of course, Gu Chuan wanted to go, but Yaksha Sect had only just begun to recover, and as its leader, he could not be absent too long.
Gu Zhenzhen looked forward to the journey. It would be her first true adventure, and her spirits were high. On the day of departure, many gathered at Celestial Maiden Peak to see them off. But Liang Xi was not one for such fanfare, so the three slipped away quietly the night before.
“Brother Zhuang, if you knew Liang Xi was leaving last night, why make such a show today?” Li Moqing asked, puzzled by Zhuang Yunzheng’s intentions.
Dawn broke over the misty river; sunlight rose as gulls skimmed the water—a lovely scene. Zhuang Yunzheng did not answer, instead pointing at the sun. “They say Celestial Maiden Peak is the best place for sunrise. Since we’ve all traveled long, why not relax a little? As for my little brother, though he seems sociable, he dislikes farewells. He’s always been that way.”
“Don’t worry about him. He won’t let himself suffer. He’s never had a chance to shine before, but now, with lovely company, how could he not show off?” After a burst of laughter, everyone’s spirits lifted, and they knew Zhuang Yunzheng spoke the truth.
A luxurious carriage rolled down a smooth stone road, the stones polished to a gleam by years of use. The coachman, rough in appearance, handled his whip idly; the intelligent horses knew the way home and needed no urging.
“Old Liu, you’ve done well this time. I told the Master you’ll be joining the Manor after the New Year. Your family will finally have security.” Inside, a commanding male voice spoke. Old Liu, grateful, bowed his head. For three generations, his family had been coachmen, but he was the first to enter Mingyu Manor. Everyone for miles knew its name.
Once inside, his family would be set for life. The man behind him, Master Yang, was the Manor’s steward—known for his style. He had replaced many coachmen before, but kept Old Liu for his diligence, a family trait.
“Thank you, Master Yang. I’ll work even harder in the future.” Old Liu’s pride was obvious.
“Your family has always been diligent. Previously, the Master had you leave the Manor to make you more cautious. Now, after three generations, you’re coming back—don’t waste this chance. If you fall back into old habits, I won’t be able to protect you.”
Master Yang knew Old Liu’s nature—diligent but easily proud. A stern warning would keep him in check. Old Liu’s expression sobered at once. “Rest assured, Master Yang. Even in the Manor, I remain your man. I’ll never forget your kindness.”
“All right, all right, no need to be so tense. I know your temperament. You’ve traveled three days—you must be tired. Rest for a few days.” As he spoke, the carriage stopped before a grand gate—the Yang Residence, where Master Yang lived. As the Manor’s steward, he was someone of little note inside, but outside, he was impressive.
The residence was comfortable and stylish. The steward had received word early and came running to welcome Master Yang. Soon, a tall, well-dressed middle-aged man stepped from the carriage. His clothes were not ostentatious, but the fine fabric spoke of wealth. His appearance was unremarkable, but being from Mingyu Manor, he carried an air of distinction.
“How did things go?” he asked the steward. Before leaving, he had instructed that if any outstanding people arrived, they must be retained. The Master loved meeting handsome and beautiful guests. Mingyu Manor only hosted the most attractive people—no one knew why, but that was the rule.
It seemed pretentious, but such was human nature; the more exclusive, the more people longed to visit. Rumor had it that Mingyu Manor was paradise itself, only adding to its allure. The steward’s daily task was to select the best, for only the best were worthy.
“Sir, while you were gone, three guests arrived—one man, two women. The man is handsome, the ladies stunning, all with an air of nobility. I see countless people every day, but never have I seen such outstanding individuals. I dared not make a decision without you.”
“Oh? Intriguing. The Four Great Water Clans are nearby, but you’ve seen the best people in the world. Are these three truly that exceptional? If so, I must see for myself.” Master Yang trusted his steward’s eye; praise from him was rare, so he was curious.
The Master had been annoyed lately—too many ugly guests! Such people had no right to enter Mingyu Manor. If even this task could not be done, he was unfit to be steward. Recalling the Master’s words, Master Yang shivered and quickened his pace.
In the main hall, he saw the three guests seated on the grand chairs. The youth was about sixteen, with a prominent brow and nose, and bright, spirited eyes—handsome and dignified in a cream robe with exquisite stitching. His boots were from Qinglian Hall, which produced only ten pairs a year for the wealthy and noble. The two women were even more remarkable. On his left, a woman in white gauze, her face partially hidden, displayed delicate features and a certain frailty. On his right, the other woman defied description—her plain blue robe was ordinary, yet radiated an ethereal grace. Though the woman in white was beautiful, she paled beside the one in blue. Master Yang thought, if she were dressed in finery, what a sight she would be! As Bai Letian once wrote: “A backward glance, a hundred charms arise; all the beauties of the palace fade in comparison.”
Master Yang had always thought this an exaggeration, but now he saw it was true. If the blue-robed girl wore elegant clothes, even nature itself would pale beside her. How had he never heard of such beauty? He shot his steward a stern look, but inwardly was delighted; only these three were worthy of entering Mingyu Manor!
“Ha ha, forgive my rudeness, friends. I’ve just returned and my steward is a bit clumsy—if anything was lacking in your welcome, please forgive us. May I ask your names?”
The young man and two women were, of course, Liang Xi, Ji Anran, and Gu Zhenzhen. After leaving Wangchuan, they traveled by water and then land, marveling at the bustling sights. Liang Xi, aware that Mingyu Manor only welcomed the attractive, dressed more extravagantly than ever. Gu Zhenzhen was overjoyed to wear clothes chosen by her beloved Brother Liang Xi. As for Ji Anran, who looked best in anything, she chose a simple blue robe, her hair carelessly bound.
Perhaps the most eye-catching thing about Ji Anran was the jade ornament on her waist. Thus attired, the trio arrived at the Yang Residence to await Master Yang’s approval—since only he could grant entry to Mingyu Manor. The servants had never seen such bold guests, but, awed by their bearing, dared not interfere. Luckily, Master Yang returned just in time.
Yet, instead of being angry, Master Yang became humble before the three guests. “You must be Master Yang,” Liang Xi said with a smile. “I’ve brought these beauties to seek your guidance on visiting Mingyu Manor. Are our looks and bearing sufficient to be admitted? As a man, I have little interest myself, but as you see, my two companions are most curious about this mysterious place. I couldn’t let them be disappointed, could I?”
Ji Anran rolled her eyes inwardly—what nonsense was this about bringing beauties? What did she have to do with him? But despite herself, she felt a sweet warmth inside, though she would never let him see it, lest she lose the upper hand. Gu Zhenzhen, hearing Liang Xi call her his “companion,” was both shy and delighted.
Master Yang looked at the two women and realized the noble youth spoke truth. “Young sir, you jest. Others call me Master Yang out of courtesy; you may call me Old Yang. With your qualities, you are more than qualified to visit the Manor. The Master loves meeting outstanding people; you will be most welcome.”
“That’s wonderful. My name is Liang Xi, and I’ll rely on your guidance in Mingyu Manor.” Liang Xi was adept at social niceties; since he was young, calling the man “Old Yang” would be inappropriate—“Brother Yang” was respectful yet friendly.
Master Yang appreciated his tact. “Brother Liang, you’re right. Since you call me brother, I won’t deceive you. I suspect your main purpose is to heal your companion’s injuries, isn’t that so?”
Master Yang’s discerning eye saw at once the woman in the cloak was gravely injured. Mingyu Manor was famed for its medicines; the Master had always said that anyone who entered could be cured, so long as they still breathed.
This was indeed the case, so Liang Xi did not hide it. Why bother, since it would soon be clear anyway? “Yes, my sister here was badly hurt saving me. Only Mingyu Manor can help her, so we came in haste.”
“Ha ha, so that’s how it is. Our Master values loyalty above all. That your lady would risk her life for you shows deep affection, and you, Brother Liang, are even rarer—a truly capable man!” Master Yang had met many with beautiful wives, but few could manage their relationships well. Liang Xi, however, kept harmony between two stunning women—a skill not to be underestimated.
Beautiful women, faced with the man they love, often grow competitive—a recipe for disaster. Yet here, Master Yang saw only perfection. Such a man must not be taken lightly. “Rest assured, Brother Liang. Leave everything to me. It’s late—rest here tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll make all the arrangements.”
“Thank you, Brother Yang!” Liang Xi rose, and Ji Anran and Gu Zhenzhen followed. Master Yang, shrewd as he was, already had a plan. Gaining his approval was not difficult, but to truly enter Mingyu Manor, one had to best him in a contest.
Suddenly, Master Yang sprang forward, both palms thrusting at Liang Xi’s back in a powerful move. If struck, Liang Xi would be gravely injured, if not dead. Yet Liang Xi strolled on, unperturbed; behind him, a curtain of water appeared, effortlessly absorbing the blow. Liang Xi had anticipated this and used the Water Command technique to dissolve the attack, avoiding conflict.
Master Yang was shocked—this was the famed Water Lord’s technique. Since the Water Lord’s treasury had recently opened, and this youth could wield such skills, was he the Water Lord’s heir or even the Lord reborn? Either way, such a person could not be slighted. Luckily, he bore no malice; otherwise, who could withstand the Water Command?
“Brother Yang, why do you look so pale? You must be exhausted from your journey. You should rest—don’t worry about us,” Liang Xi said, turning back with a look of “concern.”
Master Yang, realizing his attempt had failed and that Liang Xi’s strength far surpassed his own, decided not to try again. “Ah, yes, I am tired from traveling. Let us part for now and meet tomorrow.”
“Brother, that old man just now attacked with full force. If not for your Water Command shield, you’d be dead! When this is over, I’ll make him pay. I’ll never forgive anyone who tries to harm you!” Ji Anran, having suffered much, was fiercely protective of those she loved.
Her nature was extreme—gentle and playful to those she cared for, ruthless to those who threatened them. Liang Xi knew her well and smiled. “No need to worry; I’m fine. Don’t get angry—it’s bad for your complexion. My great beauty, the most beautiful in the world, how could you risk marring that face?”
“Zhenzhen, rest assured—your Brother Liang Xi will see you healed. As for your feelings for him, he knows, and you are important to him. Never belittle yourself, understand?” Ji Anran comforted Gu Zhenzhen. Liang Xi was not one for evasion—if Gu Zhenzhen liked him and he treated her only as a sister, that would be unmanly. To love is to love. Anyone who could love you with her life deserved to be loved in return.
“I believe in Brother Liang Xi. And I’m so happy now—I used to think I had no place in his heart, but I was wrong. He does care for me.” Gu Zhenzhen’s spirits were so high it was hard to tell she was gravely injured.
“Everyone in this residence must be formidable. Tonight, the three of us will take turns keeping watch, just in case. We still don’t know what Mingyu Manor is truly like, so we can’t be careless.”
“Yes, we understand. But with the three of us together, we could pierce the heavens if we wished. Caution is good, but don’t overdo it or they’ll look down on us.” Ji Anran was unafraid, though with Gu Zhenzhen’s condition, it was wise to be careful.
