Chapter 39: Your Love Consultant

Ethan’s career was undergoing a grueling test.
As a legendary bachelor who had been single from the day he was born until this very moment, the first client to seek his custom services had actually come to him for relationship advice.
Was he really qualified for this?
The white-haired woman produced a stuffed money pouch right in front of him. She untied the red cord and revealed the glittering gold inside.
At the very least, he could give it a try.
Ethan swallowed and made a difficult decision.
Surely, even if he had never eaten pork, he had at least seen pigs run. Besides, he had once lived in an age when the internet was highly advanced. Although he had never seriously studied books on romance, he had read one or two novels about love, and his heart had fluttered at the sweet scenes within them.
“May I ask what problem has brought you here?”
“It’s like this. I once had a boyfriend. We were extremely close. We lived in the same room, ate every meal from the same pot, and often slept in the same bed.”
Oh no!
Ethan’s heart tightened.
This girl had a boyfriend, and from the sound of it, they had lived together for a long time. Compared with him—a novice who could not even be called a beginner—she was practically an expert. As for him, forget living with a girl; he had only ever seen kissing in movies and animated films.
If he rashly offered some immature advice, she would probably see through him as an amateur at once.
But as a conscientious businessman, Ethan could not let his unease show on his face. He could only grit his teeth and follow her lead.
“Has something gone wrong between you and your boyfriend?”
“A few years ago, circumstances beyond my control forced me to leave the place where we lived together.”
“In other words, you’ve been in a long-distance relationship all these years.”
Ethan propped his chin on one hand, doing his best to sound like a relationship expert by using professional terminology.
“A long-distance relationship?”
The red eyes beneath the mask held a trace of confusion.
“It means that although you’re separated by distance, you’ve continued to remain romantically involved.”
This was a serious problem. Ethan had long heard how difficult long-distance relationships could be. Of all the cases he knew about, more than eighty percent had ended in disaster—and that had been in an age when people could make video calls whenever they wished!
In this world, where lovers could only communicate by letter if they had not seen each other for years, such relationships were bound to be even more fragile.
A bad premonition began to form in Ethan’s mind.
Could it be that after her long-distance relationship had fallen apart, this girl had come to him to commission a magic scroll so she could gun down her boyfriend?
The white-haired girl nodded. “Yes. That’s why I’m worried he may no longer recognize me.”
“How could that happen? Never underestimate the power of love. True lovers can recognize each other at a glance in a crowd—not after merely a few years, but even after ten or twenty years!”
That was how it always happened in romance novels, and it had always been Ethan’s creed.
He was a devoted romantic.

Ethan felt that he had successfully conveyed his faith in love to the white-haired girl. She seemed moved, gazing deeply at him as though she agreed with his view.
“But recently, something happened that has troubled me greatly. I accidentally discovered that my boyfriend has become very close to one of his female colleagues. Not only do they work together, they also live near each other. He often visits her at home and cooks for her. Every day, they appear together, looking perfectly happy…”
So cold!
Why had it suddenly become so cold?
Even Ethan, an ice-element mage, could not help hugging his arms and shivering several times. The chill came from the depths of his soul. The red eyes beneath his spiral mask seemed to have fallen into an eternal night.
A phrase suddenly came to Ethan’s mind.
You could never hide the look in someone’s eyes when they wanted to kill.
Though it lasted only a fleeting moment, the terror and coldness reached straight into his heart.
Yet in the next instant, all the pressure vanished. Ethan heard laughter coming from beneath the spiral mask, light and gentle as a stream.
“But in truth, it’s merely a pure friendship between colleagues, isn’t it?”
“Of course.”
Realizing that this might be a matter of life and death, Ethan became fully alert.
“In a situation like this, you must remain calm and analyze things carefully. For instance, have you ever seen them behave intimately in a way that went beyond friendship?”
“No.”
“Then don’t let a moment of anger blind you. Perhaps they really are only friends.”
“Anger? I’m not angry,” the white-haired girl said, puzzled. “I’m only considering whether I should tie him up and lock him in a cellar where no one could ever find him, so that whenever he opened his eyes, I would be the only person he could see.”
Why were you suddenly telling such a terrifying ghost story?
“Absolutely not! Taking extreme measures at a time like this will only backfire.”
For some reason, Ethan suddenly felt a powerful sense of responsibility. Although the white-haired girl appeared to have romantic experience, she was far too extreme when it came to handling emotional matters.
“Since you’ve come to me, I’m no slouch. You two have been separated for a long time, so why not start there?”
“Hm?”
“I mean, we could plan an unforgettable reunion.”
Ethan did not understand love very well, but he knew something about the psychology of men. As the saying went, people who had never been in love were often the ones most willing to harbor beautiful fantasies about it—even when those fantasies seemed completely unrealistic.
But this was a world where magic existed.
Turning unrealistic fantasies into reality was precisely the unique charm of magic.
He entered work mode.
“When do you plan to meet him?”
“Once I’ve finished the work at hand,” the white-haired girl replied after a moment’s thought.
“Even better. That gives us plenty of time. I’m not boasting, but the magic scrolls I make have their own unique qualities. They’ll definitely leave a deep impression on your boyfriend—one he’ll still be unable to forget decades from now!”
Ethan patted his chest in assurance, while countless ideas had already begun forming in his mind.

Before that, however, there was one problem he absolutely had to solve.
“When you go outside in the future, could you please wear shoes?”
This was simply unbearable.
He was genuinely afraid that before the day arrived, his client might accidentally step on a nail, contract tetanus, and die young.
“I understand now.”
The white-haired girl suddenly realized something. “What kind of shoes do you like?”
“Crystal high heels… Huh? What does the kind of shoes I like have to do with anything? I’m seriously only worried that you’ll step on a nail. It’s dangerous.”
First of all, Ethan had to make it clear that he was not a foot fetishist.
He was truly concerned only for his client’s safety. There were not many honest and conscientious businessmen like him in this day and age.
“Mm.”
The white-haired girl completely ignored his disclaimer and muttered to herself, “The shoe shops in the big cities should have some… Then it’s settled. I’ll come back to see you.”
Seeing her turn to leave, Ethan hurriedly called after her.
“Let’s settle one matter at a time. You paid so much money, but you still haven’t said what kind of scroll you want me to make.”
“Magic scroll?”
The girl’s reaction made Ethan seriously doubt whether she had listened properly to the bartender’s advertisement. His shop sold magic scrolls; relationship counseling had merely been an improvised service he had added on the spot.
“Is there anything in particular you want right now? Anything at all.”
“Then I’ll commission a bouquet of roses.”
“That’s easy.”
Ethan smiled faintly. This would be much easier to make than a triple ice arrow. He led her to the charged parchment shop and drew the scroll right in front of her.
When he handed it over, she activated it almost immediately.
A bouquet of crystal-clear roses appeared, blooming with passionate brilliance.
Even through the spiral mask, Ethan could sense how delighted his client was.
Roses were a symbol of love.
That bouquet must have reminded her of her boyfriend, right?
That had to be why such happiness shone from her eyes.
Ethan waved at her. The commission was complete. It was time for him to withdraw quietly and leave his good deed unspoken.
This was Old Sen’s Magic Scroll Shop.
You could even come here for relationship counseling.
