“Xiaodong, thank you for protecting Rongrong. This is just a small token of my appreciation. I hope you’ll accept it.”

Wang Dong looked at the box extended before him and shook his head, without a hint of hesitation.

“No, Uncle Ning. Rongrong is my friend. It’s only right that I protect her.”

Ning Fengzhi seemed to have anticipated this response. His voice was gentle as he said, “It’s not anything valuable.”

Then he opened the box, revealing a small Seven Treasures Glazed Pagoda.

“This is a unique signal of the Seven Treasures Glazed Sect. If you ever find yourself in danger, use your soul power to shatter it. No matter when or where, disciples of the sect will come to your aid. But it can only be used once.”

Having said this, Wang Dong no longer refused and reached out to take it.

“Thank you, Uncle Ning.”

“Look, everyone!”

Ning Rongrong’s voice caught everyone’s attention. Following the direction of her finger, a red sunset cast its glow over the crimson-gold hills.

It was breathtaking—an endless feast for the eyes.

In that moment, all hearts stilled, savoring the tranquility.

“Your Highness, the roasted whole lamb is ready!”

A guard’s voice came through, and Wang Dong felt a sudden tug, as someone grabbed him and started running.

“Xiaodong! Hurry! It won’t be as tasty once it cools!”

The wind swept through their hair as the two children’s shadows stretched long in the sunset, filled with innocence and joy.

That night, the adults barely touched their food, while the two children ate until their bellies were round and full.

Wang Dong lay by the campfire, completely at ease, gazing up at the stars.

This was his first day after unexpectedly arriving ten thousand years in the past. It wasn’t so bad!

He had even become good friends with Ning Rongrong, one of the original seven disciples of the Shrek Seven Devils. Everything felt so surreal. If Xiaoxiao knew, she definitely wouldn’t believe it and might think he was dreaming.

But if only it were a dream—how he longed to return to those days fighting side by side with the Seven Devils.

The heavy sadness soon drifted away.

Ning Rongrong noticed and exchanged a glance with Xue Qinghe and Ning Fengzhi.

A sly smile played at the corner of Xue Qinghe’s mouth. He winked quickly at Ning Rongrong with his right eye and suddenly said, “Oh? What’s our young master Wang thinking about? His tears nearly fell to the ground.”

Wang Dong instinctively wiped the corner of his eyes, finding nothing there. Seeing the three of them chuckling secretly, he realized he’d been teased.

“Uncle Ning, Rongrong, I’m going back to the tent first.”

Without looking back, he left.

Ning Rongrong leaned closer to Xue Qinghe. “Prince brother, Xiaodong seems upset with you.”

Though her words sounded caring, the tone was full of schadenfreude.

Xue Qinghe stared at Wang Dong’s retreating figure, already plotting in his mind.

“Teacher, Rongrong, all the necessities have been placed in the tent. I’ll head back to rest now—please make yourselves comfortable.”

Ning Fengzhi nodded. “Thank you.”

After Xue Qinghe left, Ning Rongrong watched him enter the same tent Wang Dong had just gone into, then approached Ning Fengzhi.

“Dad, do you think those two will fight?”

Ning Fengzhi reached out and tickled her nose. “You little troublemaker!”

“Hehe.”

Meanwhile, Wang Dong returned to the tent to find it already prepared.

The tent was spacious, with two beds arranged on either side, separated by a screen. On each bed lay two sets of clothes—one set of pajamas and one set of outerwear.

Wang Dong picked them up and found they were his size.

He shed his outer robe and turned to soak his whole body in the bathing tub.

Just as Xue Qinghe neared, he heard the sounds of Wang Dong bathing and stopped at the door to keep watch.

Wang Dong barely poked his head out and saw a pair of boots stationed there. He thought Xue Qinghe might come in to prank him but was surprised to see he simply stood guard by the door.

He had misjudged him.

After washing away his fatigue, Wang Dong changed into his pajamas and slipped under the covers. Clearing his throat, he signaled that Xue Qinghe could enter.

Xue Qinghe came in but, unusually, said nothing and went straight to his own bed.

He bathed and changed in one smooth motion.

When he finished and came out, he found Wang Dong already sound asleep. He walked over, pinched the plump little face affectionately.

“You little guy, you’re ungrateful despite my kindness—what a temper.”

With that, he returned to his own bed.

Wang Dong frowned slightly before drifting into a deep sleep.

The next morning.

“Achoo—achoo—”

Sneezes echoed here and there throughout the temporary camp.

Four people sat quietly at the table having breakfast, except—

“Achoo—”

Wang Dong watched as Xue Qinghe sneezed repeatedly, puzzled.

Could it be that the bathwater was too cold yesterday?

But isn’t he a soul master? How could he catch a cold so easily?

As he pondered, Ning Fengzhi’s voice came nearby.

“Qinghe, did you deal with those bandits?”

Xue Qinghe’s voice was hoarse. “Yes, Teacher, that’s why I could steal some time to come here and relax.”

Ning Fengzhi nodded.

“Well done. Since you’re injured, rest well. Next time something like yesterday happens, have the guards rush ahead. You still need to take care of yourself!”

“Thank you for your concern, Teacher.”

He’s injured?

Wang Dong glanced at Xue Qinghe, whose complexion was indeed paler than the day before, feeling a twinge of unease.

After breakfast, Xue Qinghe and Ning Fengzhi went to the temporary study to discuss serious matters.

Seeing they didn’t notice him, Wang Dong slipped out of the camp.

But...

Wang Dong glanced behind a tree and saw a hem of clothing not well concealed. He sighed.

“Come out.”

As soon as he spoke, Ning Rongrong appeared, hands behind her back, trotting over.

“Xiaodong, where are you going? Can I come with you?”

Knowing Ning Rongrong’s temper, Wang Dong understood if he refused, she would sneak after him anyway. So he took her hand.

“Don’t lose me.”

Ning Rongrong smiled. “Okay! But are you going deep into the forest to explore? Dad said there are powerful soul beasts inside. We shouldn’t go too far.”

Wang Dong recalled that hoarse voice.

“Don’t worry. We’ll just skirt the edges, not go inside.”

“Alright!”

...

In the temporary study.

“What? Those two went into the depths of the forest alone?” Xue Qinghe said in disbelief.

A guard hurriedly reported, “A covert squad has been following them. So far, no danger.”

Ning Fengzhi hadn’t expected the two children to disappear so quickly.

“Rongrong’s been spoiled,” said Xue Qinghe bluntly.

“Teacher, it’s definitely Xiaodong’s idea,” Ning Fengzhi said with a smile, neither confirming nor denying.

“Let’s go see what those little rascals are up to.”
